Corning’s Display Technologies segment manufactures glass substrates for active matrix liquid crystal displays (“LCDs”) that are used primarily in LCD televisions, notebook computers and flat panel desktop monitors.

 

Scope of Position:

Sheet glass process management for 1 to 3 production lines including leading all activity related to achieving process objectives, identifying sources of variation, improving processes, and providing support for product developments and line startups.

 

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Provide engineering expertise for fundamental understanding of manufacturing issues
  • Solve process issues through data analysis, experimentation, and collaboration with SME's
  • Use rigorous processes and technical knowledge to build fundamental understanding for key process steps
  • Provide engineering-level production support to manufacturing operations
  • Develop and maintain systems to monitor and proactively address equipment issues and process performance
  • Receive and integrate new technologies to improve process capability while ensuring proper processes are followed
  • Recommend and implement improvements to processes and equipment
  • Lead and/or support projects involving cost reduction, process optimization, and new technology migrations into the plant
  • Develop and update engineering and operations documentation
  • Provide training for operations workforce regarding equipment or operations changes
  • Work with other team members and departments to ensure that product output at each process step meets or exceeds manufacturing budgets and goals
  • Develop subject-matter expertise of material, process and/or equipment in focused areas of manufacturing and engineering
  • Execute cost reduction and PEx projects (DMAIC/DESIGN) in line with business objectives
  • Develop and use project plans and timelines to achieve project goals without sacrificing safety, intellectual property, or quality

 

Work Hours:

  • Standard hours (M-F 8-5). Flexible hours may be required to support off-hours experimentation on weekends and evenings. This position requires periodic weekend team coverage.

 

Travel Requirements:

  • We anticipate less than 10% travel for this role, with possible international travel.

 

Required Education and Experience:

  • We require a BS or MS in Engineering (Glass, Ceramics, Mechanical fields subject areas preferred)
  • We are seeking 1-3+ years of engineering experience in a manufacturing environment (preferred)
  • Ability to learn new technology and processes quickly
  • Demonstrate fundamental understanding through science and engineering skills
  • Collaborate across organizational boundaries and integrate solutions
  • Use the scientific method and engineering principles to solve problems thoroughly and effectively
  • Translate engineering solutions to process requirements that deliver and/or improve performance criteria
  • Experience with experimental design
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize work on an independent basis in a fast-paced manufacturing environment
  • Strong data analysis and interpretation skills
  • Results oriented and high commitment
  • Basic knowledge of Six Sigma (DMAIC / DESGN) methodology

 

Desired Skills:

  • Experience in glass manufacturing
  • Broad skill set in mechanical engineering principles (Thermodynamics, Fluid Mechanics, Heat Transfer, Material Science)
  • Six Sigma Greenbelt or Blackbelt certification
  • Lean Manufacturing techniques

 

Soft Skills:

  • Personal initiative and commitment; positive attitude, flexible, and strong work ethic
  • Organized with good planning and time management skills
  • Ability to build relationships within multi-functional groups; team building skills
  • Strong communication and presentation skills
  • Ability to allocate/supervise resources to accomplish goals
