Corning’s Display Technologies segment manufactures glass substrates for active matrix liquid crystal displays (“LCDs”) that are used primarily in LCD televisions, notebook computers and flat panel desktop monitors.


Scope of Position:

  • Melting and Delivery system process management for 1 to 3 production lines. Lead all activity related to achieving process objectives.


Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Process control and discipline, and continuous improvement
  • Technical analysis of melting and delivery processes. Application of analytical results to improving processes and meeting customer requirements.
  • Design and implementation of process experiments
  • Coordinate Line activity with peripheral services (maintenance, etc.) and downstream processes
  • Coordinate Furnace heat-ups, and process debug, checkout, and start-up
  • Collaborate with Division Engineering to facilitate the introduction of new processes, products, and technology
  • Performance Excellence — Six Sigma


Travel Requirements:

  • Domestic Travel and International Travel are not common, but can occur in this job (<10%). Rare international travel may be required.
  • We have sister plants in three Asian countries and headquarters and scientific support in New York


Work Hours:

  • Work-hours are M-F 08:00 to 17:00 with 1 hour for lunch
  • The plant has eight weekend teams that rotate coverage (six or seven weekends per year, including one major holiday or one to two minor holidays)
  • Extended hours, including weekends, are required during start-ups or special projects (typically one to two times per year)


Education & Experience:

  • We require a BS or MS in Chemical Engineering, Ceramic Engineering, Materials Science, Engineering, or Science major (physics, chemistry, biology, etc.)
  • We are seeking 1-5 years in manufacturing desired but it is not required
  • Can take routine data retrieval and analysis and develop a standard methodology
  • Strong problem solving skills, including the ability to facilitate problem solving teams and delegate tasks to others in the pursuit of a solution
  • Strongly results oriented. Able to handle multiple complex tasks and set priorities with multiple internal customers.
  • Has a thorough understanding of and can practice Process Control and Discipline. Can discern when to follow SOP, and when SOP no longer applies and additional partner input may be necessary.
  • Can be a team member or a team leader within functional area. Supports teams with data-based analysis and conclusions.


Desired Skills:

  • Strong working knowledge of MS Excel, including formulas and graphing functions
  • Practical experience with basic statistics, familiarity with advanced statistical methods, and a track record of identifying sources of variation
  • Demonstrated leadership or strong teamwork in accomplishing common goals
  • Working knowledge of Six Sigma (DMAIC) methodology


Soft Skills:

  • Consistently communicates issues and concerns to partners. Has developed verbal and written communication skills to effectively communicate scientific concepts and data to others in order to provide instruction and influence decisions.
  • Recognizes need for leadership in non-standard production situations and inserts self to take responsibility to lead operators and mechanics in non-standard operations
  • Seeks out production supervisors, peers, and operators to gain process understanding. Listens to their concerns and seeks resolution within the functional area.
