Corning’s Mobile Consumer Electronics segment manufactures chemically strengthened cover and back glass, such as Gorilla® Glass® for the consumer electronics market.

 

The Melting Process Engineer will manage and optimize the melting and delivery system processes for production lines. This role focuses on process control, discipline, and continuous improvement while providing technical expertise to address manufacturing challenges. The position requires a combination of data-driven problem-solving, collaboration across departments, and a commitment to safety and operational excellence.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Process Management & Improvement:
    • Oversee melting and delivery system processes for production lines
    • Maintain process control and implement continuous improvement initiatives
    • Develop and execute process changes to improve capability and efficiency
  2. Problem-Solving & Analysis:
    • Solve process issues through data analysis, experimentation, and collaboration with subject matter experts
    • Build a fundamental understanding of key process steps using engineering principles
    • Recommend and implement improvements to equipment and processes
  3. Technical Expertise:
    • Develop and maintain systems to monitor equipment and process performance, proactively addressing issues
    • Receive and integrate new technologies to enhance process capability
    • Lead and support PEx (Process Excellence) projects, such as cost reduction, process optimization, and technology migration
  4. Documentation & Training:
    • Develop and update engineering and operations documentation to maintain ISO compliance
    • Provide training for the operations workforce regarding process or equipment changes
  5. Collaboration & Safety:
    • Collaborate with other teams and departments to meet or exceed manufacturing goals
    • Actively engage in plant safety initiatives to ensure a safe working environment

 

Work Schedule

  • Standard schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM-5:00 PM
  • Flexibility required to support off-hours experimentation and projects (evenings/weekends)
  • Periodic weekend on-call coverage is expected

 

Required Education and Experience:

  • BS or MS in Engineering (Glass, Ceramics, Mechanical, or Chemical preferred)
  • 0-3+ years of engineering experience in a manufacturing environment

 

Travel Requirements:

  • Expected travel is minimal (<10%), with rare international travel.

 

Required Skills:

  • Strong scientific and engineering skills for fundamental understanding, including broad knowledge of engineering principles (Thermodynamics, Fluid Mechanics, Heat Transfer, Material Science)
  • Ability to learn new technologies and processes quickly
  • Proficiency in data analysis and interpreting results
  • Experience with experimental design and applying engineering principles
  • Strong multitasking and prioritization skills in a fast-paced environment
  • Results-oriented with a focus on problem-solving and performance improvement

 

Desired Skills:

  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Power BI)
  • Basic statistical knowledge
  • Understanding of manufacturing systems/operations
  • Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing techniques

The range for this position is $70,776.00 - $97,317.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.
