Projects involved with: The delivery of new Gorilla® glass compositions, products, and processes from R&D into manufacturing operations; working with technology managers and project managers to drive improvements in Gorilla division.

 

Role within the Organization

The position will be focused on the design, development and implementation of controls system solutions to improve manufacturing process for melting and forming glass in Gorilla Glass. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in controls/instrumentation, field devices, automation, or engineering systems, technical curiosity and a desire for project leadership opportunities. There will be a large emphasis on PID / advanced control algorithm and system modeling, ability to debug field devices (AO/AI/DO/DI) issues, as well as strong interpersonal skills to function effectively within cross-functional and global project teams.

 

Day to Day Responsibilities

  • Working individually or alongside other experienced professionals to design, develop and implement controls software and controls system solutions for manufacturing processes
  • Define appropriate controls system software and drawings layouts for meeting process requirements, delivering process control functions.
  • Evaluate existing process requirement and control strategies and propose improvements
  • Work with process SMEs to identify promising areas for applying control solutions
  • Evaluate readiness of power control solutions from R&D organizations, and facilitate the technology transfer into manufacturing
  • Documentation of designs and experimental results.
  • Support process electrical and manufacturing with troubleshooting electrical controls system issues that impact the process operation and performance.

 

Travel Requirements: We anticipate approximately 25%-30% for this role (mix of domestic and international)

 

Hours of work/work schedule/flextime: 40hrs+/week plus travel, and periodic evening or morning conference calls

 

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelors or Masters in Electrical Engineering with a concentration in controls system software --PLC (Mistubishi or AB), RTP, C++, C#, VB, Python.
  • Masters highly preferred with coursework in advanced power control systems. IFIX in HMI/SCADA platform.
  • 1+ year experience in controls system software design and implementation at low to medium voltage. Power supply and regulation design including transformer, circuit breaker, power cable and power regulation component such as Silicon Controlled Rectifier (SCR) selection, calculation and evaluation according to NEC or IEC.
  • Experience in power delivery in Glass or Ceramic industries is a plus.
  • Experience leading control system installation and startup is valuable.

 

Required Skills

  • Strong understanding of control system/ theory, electrical power systems, their components, and non-linear load applications.
  • Willing to understand Corning hot-end glass process and apply the engineering solution for process optimization and improvement through efficient power delivery.
  • Motivated self-starter with an independent learning style
  • Strong understanding and practical application of classical electrical and control theory, including 3-phase power supply system to load balance and coordination.
  • Familiar with power electrical component theories and applications, including circuit breaker, transformer, SCR and related Potential Transformer/Current Transformer (PT/CT).
  • Programming experience in Matlab or similar mathematical computing language to perform data analysis, control design, power system performance analysis.
  • Application of DMAIC method for problem solving
  • CAD drawing and BOM design skills

  • Strong understanding or a great desire and ability to learn:
  • Power Control hardware and software (PLC, HMI, SCADA/DCS, etc.)
  • Electrical Power Modelling and Analysis
  • Multi-variant statistical analysis (PCA, PLS)
  • CAD / 3D/ Matlab Modeling skills
