For our location in Helsinki, Finland, we are looking for a 

 

Sr. Scientist Solid & Fracture Mechanics, Glass

 

Scope of Position:

  • Model new materials, components, and process conditions to understand, predict, and improve product performance and properties.
  • Develop and apply computational, analytical, solid and fracture mechanics modeling tools to gain fundamental insight into underlying physical mechanisms and to support research and new product development.
  • Demonstrate a strong combination of modeling and data analysis skills, with a high level of expertise in both numerical and analytical methods.
  • Possess a strong foundation in solid and fracture mechanics.
  • Collaborate closely within a global research, development, and engineering team.

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with experimental, testing and engineering groups on joint projects.
  • Develop, implement, and validate numerical and analytical models against experimental data.
  • Identify failure modes and potential critical challenges for new products and materials.
  • Analyze data, interpret results, and communicate key findings and their impact to project teams through presentations and technical reports.
  • Develop intellectual property by authoring technical reports, scientific publications, and patent disclosures.

Required Skills:

  • Strong foundation in Solid and Fracture Mechanics.
  • Expertise in finite element analysis (Ansys, LS-DYNA).
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office tools for corporate communication and technical documentation.
  • Experience with modeling dynamic problems, material non-linearities, fracture.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills.
  • The individual should be able to translate industrial needs into well-defined modeling problems.

Desired Skills:

  • Programming experience using MATLAB, Python, APDL scripting (Ansys).
  • Familiarity with fractography of brittle materials (glass).
  • Experience with HPC & Linux.
  • Strong knowledge of statistical analysis.

Travel Requirements:

  • Availability for business travel to global Corning locations, as needed.

Hours of work/work schedule/flextime:

  • Hybrid, 40 hr. work week, flextime, full-time position.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Ph.D. in Solid Mechanics or
  • M.S. in Solid Mechanics with 3 to 5 years of relevant industrial experience.
