Role Purpose
The EHS Engineer reports to the EHS Manager and is responsible for evaluating, developing, implementing, and sustaining workplace safety and health programs in accordance with applicable regulatory requirements, ISO 14001/45001, corporate EHS standards, internal management systems, and industry best practices. This role partners with site leadership and employees at all levels to strengthen safety culture, manage risk, and drive measurable continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities
- Analyze safety risks and develop, implement, and maintain action plans, processes, and procedures to ensure compliance with regulatory standards, Corning safety policies, ISO 14001/45001 requirements, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Set up processes to conduct suitable and sufficient safety assessments that proactively identify hazards and reduce risk including but not limited to hazard identification & risk assessments, pre-startup safety review, job safety analysis, PPEHA, ergonomics, machine guarding, and hazardous energy.
- Analyze work tasks and environments using industry and Corning accepted ergonomic assessment methods/tools and drive improvements that reduce risk of musculoskeletal disorders.
- Lead incident, injury, near-miss, and property-damage investigations; determine root causes and implement corrective and preventive actions.
- Partners with operations, maintenance, engineering, human resources, and environmental teams to integrate safety into daily operations and project planning to grow and sustain a safety culture aligned with Corning’s values.
- Conduct or oversee third-party industrial hygiene evaluations to identify workplace hazards, assess risks, and identify exposure trends.
- Perform trending analysis to improve EHS performance by gathering data, developing reports, identifying gaps, evaluating risk, and implementing improvements.
Key Responsibilities (continued)
- Organize, evaluate, and participate in internal audits and inspections.
- Ensure the Emergency Response Plan remains current with regulatory requirements and site needs.
- Respond to plant emergency events to mitigate and control impacts, stabilize conditions, and support the timely restoration of normal operations.
- Ensure programs for contractors and construction projects are implemented consistent with Corning standards, regulatory requirements, and best management practices.
- Support the EHS Manager with the development of annual plans including goals, objectives, targets, training, audits, etc.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of federal, state, and local safety and health regulations and review relevant technical literature to support compliance and best practices.
- Manage emergency preparedness and response programs, including drills, response plans, and coordination with emergency services.
- Independently plan, prioritize, and execute assigned tasks to achieve established goals and objectives with minimal supervision.
Work Hours
- Standard Hours (Monday – Friday, 8am-5pm).
- Managing a 24/7 plant structure, so occasional support when needed.
Education & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in occupational health/safety, environmental health, engineering or the physical sciences.
- 3-5 years’ experience in a manufacturing environment.
- 2+ years’ experience developing, implementing, and sustaining safety programs.
- 2+ years conducting safety risk assessments, incident investigations, and safety training for site personnel.
Required Skills
- Strong knowledge of OSHA and other applicable federal, state, and local safety and health regulations
- Broad experience with key safety programs, including fall protection, cranes and hoists, confined spaces, powered industrial vehicles, ergonomics, and electrical safety.
- Implement behavioral based safety programs that proactively engage employees in identifying hazards and preventing mistakes/errors.
- Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and meet deadlines with minimal supervision.
- Sound judgment, attention to detail, and the ability to make timely decisions in routine and emergency situations
- Ability to drive deployment and champion change by proactively identifying, analyzing workplace hazards and taking the appropriate actions to manage risks to an acceptable level work under limited supervision.
- Demonstrated ability to build strong workplace relationships, motivate employees, and foster productive professional development.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality, demonstrate professionalism, and model a strong commitment to safety culture
- Intermediate level of knowledge using standard Microsoft desktop applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, & Outlook); experience with SharePoint a plus.
Desired Skills
- Implemented/maintained EHS programs aligned to ISO 14001/ 45001, OHSAS 18001, OSHA Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP), or other recognized EHS standards.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to interpret safety metrics and identify performance trends.
- Experience with environmental programs including air, storm & wastewater, hazardous/universal waste, and chemical management.
Soft Skills
- Collaborates across functions to implement safety programs and drive shared accountability.
- Flexible and able to effectively organize, prioritize, and execute multiple tasks.
- Ability to communicate with, mentor, and influence all levels of an organization.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare reports, procedures, and regulatory documentation.

The range for this position is $88,484.00 - $121,666.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.
