Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.
Role Purpose
Produce complete controls solutions and electrical design packages based on project specifications and standardized design practices used within OCS Technology Automation Development Group.
Key Responsibilities
- Work with mechanical designers during mechanical design process to design a control system that will enable the machine to perform its intended function safely and reliably.
- Formulate and produce complete electrical design package, which includes detailed schematics, panel layouts, bills of materials and material requisition forms, based on Corning OCS Technology Automation Development Group standard specifications and the project requirements.
- Work with other members of the Controls Engineering Department and other groups to continuously improve methods of integrating controls technology, with the goals being enhanced safety, enhanced functionality, and reduced cost; and that labor budgets and material budgets are adhered to or improved upon.
- Specify all electrical and controls-related hardware and software and produce requisition forms for material purchases.
- Integrate third party equipment and electronic component entry into electrical design package. Examples include serial communications, hardware handshaking, opto-isolation, vision systems, motion control products, transducers, and signal conditioners.
- Verify that electrical design package is complete, accurate and safe based on sound design practices and accepted standards, and that the I/O lists meet project requirements prior to issue to shop floor.
- Work with project managers, mechanical engineers, toolmakers, programmers, and electricians to solve problems to provide the project with a complete, functional system.
- Work with other members of the Controls Engineering Department and other groups to continuously improve methods of integrating controls technology.
- Provide manufacturing representatives with training specific to their current project (i.e. electrical hardware, machine operation, programming principles, program functionality and program structure).
- Ensure that all business activities are performed with the highest ethical standards and in compliance with the Corning Code of Business Conduct.
- Adhere to all health and safety rules and procedures.
Experiences/Education - Required
Education
- A BS degree in computer science, engineering, system design, or controls technology.
Experience
- Three years’ experience in electrical control systems design, preferably in the industrial automation field.
- A working knowledge of:
- AutoCAD Electrical (minimum 2019)
- Relevant electrical / safety standards (examples):
- NFPA 79, NEC, UL508A
- 2006/42/EC Machinery Directive, EN IEC60204-1, EN ISO 12100, EN62061, ISO 13849-1, ISO 13850, etc.

The range for this position is $69,847.00 - $96,040.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education. The benefits available for this position are dependent on hours worked and may include medical, dental, vision, 401(k) plan, pension plan, life insurance coverage, disability benefits, and PTO.
