Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

 

Scope of Position:

  • Controls Engineer will analyze user requirements, process design, and mechanical equipment design to create controls architecture for automated systems.
  • Work closely with engineers and technicians to define and perform experiments to develop process technologies and solutions.
  • Collaboration with internal and external subject matter experts.
  • Application of controls theory to solve challenging process control and monitoring problems.

 

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Work collaboratively with cross-functional teams to translate process requirements into controls designs and methodologies to ensure process quality.
  • Produce appropriate documentation of controls architecture to facilitate clear communication of requirements to internal and external resources.
  • Interface with vendors to select components that meet the needs of the equipment under development.
  • Develop robust code that delivers desired functionality from equipment under development.
  • Create intuitive Human Machine Interfaces on PC based platforms to deliver desired level of control and feedback from machines and testing apparatus.
  • Work directly with internal IT resources to implement network connectivity and appropriate permissions to ensure equipment functionality.
  • Perform debugging and modification of new and existing equipment to facilitate development activities.
  • Work with mechanical designers and controls technicians to resolve issues and guide best practices.
  • Coordinate with controls resources to ensure that hardware, software, and the related documentation stay in sync via appropriate change management tools and processes.
  • Design and implement test plans to validate that equipment meets functional requirements and prepare written reports summarizing findings.
  • Perform safety analyses and compliance assessments via identification of key risks and issues in order to comply with applicable standards, policies, and regulatory requirements

 

 

Travel Requirements:

  • Minimal travel expected during development (up to 15%). Up to 25% during manufacturing deployment.

 

Education & Experience: Required

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineer, or a related degree with a minimum of 3+ years of experience in development of personal computers (PC) and/or programmable logic controller (PLC) based systems. 
  • Experience programming automated machines with controls logic and configuring controls networks.
  • Experience in producing detailed definitions and associated documentation of controls system architecture.
  • Experience in specifying and selecting and configuring compatible controls hardware to construct controls systems.
  • Excellent problem solving and decision-making skills demonstrated using advanced data analysis.
  • Experience with AutoCAD Electrical and AutoCAD Vault.

 

Education & Experience: Desired

  • Experience with controls hardware and programming (Omron preferred).
  • Experience producing controls systems that interface with SCADA and MES systems.
  • Experience in performing machine safety analyses.
  • Structured text programming.
  • Experience working with large, geographically diverse project teams.
  • Experience in the fiber optic industry.

The range for this position is $88,522.00 - $121,718.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.
