Role Purpose

Corning is seeking an Automation Process Engineer to support the development of next-generation automated manufacturing processes. This role is focused on building technical understanding of critical process functions and translating that knowledge into clear process requirements for internal teams and external suppliers.
This is an excellent opportunity for an engineer who enjoys solving technical problems, working in development environments, and helping define how automated processes should work before full production systems are launched.

Key Responsibilities

•    Develop technical understanding of assigned automated manufacturing process functions.
•    Define process requirements for material handling, sequencing, measurement, timing, tolerances, and interfaces.
•    Support concept development by identifying risks and resolving technical unknowns through analysis and testing.
•    Work with prototype and development equipment to troubleshoot, refine, and validate process performance.
•    Translate process learning into clear specifications and requirements for internal teams and suppliers.
•    Collaborate with cross-functional teams and document key technical findings, risks, and assumptions.

Experiences/Education - Required

•    BS in Engineering (Mechanical, Automation Engineering, Physics, or related technical field) with 2+ years of relevant experience, or MS in a related field.
•    Experience or coursework in automation, manufacturing, process development, equipment engineering, applied physics, or similar technical areas.
•    Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
•    Proficiency with data analysis.
•    Ability or willingness to work hands-on with prototype and development equipment.
•    Strong written and verbal communication skills.
•    Ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams.
•    Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.

•    Travel up to 25% may be required.
•    This role is focused on process development and definition rather than detailed machine design.

Experiences/Education - Desired

•    Advanced degree in a relevant technical discipline.
•    Experience with automated manufacturing systems, pilot systems, advanced equipment development, or precision automation.
•    Familiarity with material handling, process characterization, timing analysis, tolerancing, or repeatability concepts.
•    Experience with MATLAB, Python, or similar engineering analysis tools.
•    Exposure to DOE, DMAIC, Six Sigma, or other structured problem-solving methods.
