Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Scope of Position:

  • Apply technologies and coordinate rapid prototyping efforts to support Optical Connectivity Solutions development.
  • Oversee and support day to day technical operations of the 3D print lab in Hickory, NC.
  • Collaborate with global technology teams to define the vision and strategy for rapid prototyping and 3D printing capabilities.
  • Engage designers and project teams to leverage 3D printing capability to support development activities.

 

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Evaluate prototype requests for their mechanical design risks and viability through clear definition of prototype requirements.
  • Identify the required equipment and skills for prototype requests.
  • Design or modify components to best leverage prototyping and additive manufacturing capabilities.
  • Collaborate with designers on design direction and material selection.
  • Process 3D print workflow for requests (support structures, part orientation to build plate, etc) utilizing Netfabb and printer specific software
  • Manage and prioritize work through the prototype request system.
  • Perform post processing of printed components.
  • Evaluate and assess 3D printing technologies to further prototyping capabilities to meet future development needs.
  • Coordinate and perform necessary 3D printer maintenance and repairs.
  • Support and maintain a safe work environment.

 

Travel Requirements:

  • 25% on average depending on the project requirements.  Includes international travel.

 

Required Education:

  • BS in Engineering, with a background in mechanical engineer and materials.

 

Required Skills:

  • Experience designing components for additive fabrication.
  • Experience running industrial 3D printers.
  • Proficient use of Creo or similar design packages.
  • Background in plastic components mechanical design.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated, applied mechanical aptitude.
  • Ability to clearly express technical ideas.
  • Ability to work in technical project teams in a team member role.
  • Proficient in the use of MS Office (Excel, Word, Project, PowerPoint)

 

Desired Skills:

  • Proficiency in SolidWorks, AUTOdesk, or NetFabb
  • Proficiency in the use of Carbon’s M1 or M2 3D printer.
  • Proficiency in the use of Stratasys Connex 3D printer.
  • Familiar with fiber optic theory.
  • Fluent in foreign languages: Spanish, Chinese, or Polish.
  • Project management experience and demonstrated application of project management tools.

The range for this position is  $81,287.00   -  $111,770.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education. The benefits available for this position are dependent on hours worked and may include medical, dental, vision, 401(k) plan, pension plan, life insurance coverage, disability benefits, and PTO.
