Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Role Purpose

 

Are you passionate about materials and plastics processing? Do you thrive in a team-oriented environment, tackling challenges and developing innovative solutions? Corning is seeking a Product Development Engineer to lead and contribute to the development of new fiber optic cable products and processes. While prior knowledge of fiber optic cable processes and polymeric materials is preferred, it's not a must—you just need the curiosity and drive to create cutting-edge solutions!

 

Key Responsibilities:

 

  • Lead and participate in global projects focused on new product and process development, cost reduction, and production expansion.

  • Collaborate with commercial and production teams to drive projects from inception to completion.

  • Conduct research, experiments, and data analysis to refine products and processes.

  • Design and optimize equipment for new cable designs.

  • Explore new processing techniques to innovate fiber optic cable development.

  • Balance hands-on work with technical leadership.

  • Document findings, generate technical reports, and present results to stakeholders.

  • Work closely with teams across the US, Mexico, Germany, and Poland to develop state-of-the-art cable solutions.

  • Develop new intellectual property and engage with suppliers for cutting-edge equipment and materials.

  • Conduct risk assessments on cable designs, materials, and processes, ensuring safety and environmental considerations.

 

What We’re Looking For

 

Required Qualifications:

 

  • BS in Mechanical or Materials Engineering.

  • Strong problem-solving skills utilizing engineering principles and structured techniques.

  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude with the ability to clearly communicate technical ideas.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

  • Master's in Mechanical or Materials Engineering

  • Experience in fiber optics, cable development, or manufacturing (preferred).

  • Knowledge of flame-retardant materials and fiber optic cable burn tests.

  • Experience with mechanical design software.

  • Background in project management and continuous process improvement.

  • Familiarity with polymer extrusion and UV curing processes.

  • Expertise in statistical analysis (Excel, JMP, Minitab).

  • Use of modeling or simulation software in product development.

The range for this position is $85,304.00 - $117,293.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education. The benefits available for this position are dependent on hours worked and may include medical, dental, vision, 401(k) plan, pension plan, life insurance coverage, disability benefits, and PTO.
