Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

 

Scope of Position:

• Development engineer supporting project teams and individuals to produce additively manufactured parts using a variety of additive technologies focused on advancing optical fiber connectivity innovation.

• Select the appropriate technology and resources to use, to best satisfy the functional requirements of a prototyping request.

• Advise on Design for Additive Manufacturing and Material selection to satisfy the functional requirements of additively manufactured components.

• Work independently to advance the understanding of additive manufacturing within the lab.

 

Day to Day Responsibilities:

• Engage internal customers to understand requirements and expectations for all prototype parts.

• Manage and prioritize work through the prototype request system.

• Ensuring customer functional requirements are met by advising on design and material.

• Provide feedback and guidance on component design features and overall approach for additive fabrication.

• Engage with external vendors on necessary support, quotes, and maintenance.

• Use of CAD programs (Creo and Solidworks) and additive fabrication prep software to manipulate both parametric and non-parametric 3D models.

• Coordinate and execution operation of printers and post print processing of parts.

• Perform troubleshooting related to additive equipment and materials engaging internal and external subject matter experts.

• Conduct routine maintenance to maintain all related equipment in the prototype lab.

• Maintain inventory levels on all consumables and printing materials within the lab.

• Maintain and improve a safe work environment.

• Work with other groups internal to Corning, following all procedures to introduce new materials and equipment into the prototyping lab.

• Work with internal safety and environmental team members on the introduction of new materials and on the disposal of all post processing waste to meet Corning and regulatory standards

 

Required Skills:

• Proficient use of 3D CAD, Creo Preferred

• Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal

• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

• Demonstrated, applied mechanical aptitude.

• Ability to clearly express technical ideas.

• Ability to work in technical project teams in a team member role.

• Proficient in the use of MS Office (Excel, Word, Project, PowerPoint)

 

Desired Skills:

• Proficiency in Solidworks, AutoDesk, and/or NetFabb

• Product or equipment design experience using CAD.

• Ability to interpret drawings and schematics. • Familiar with fiber optic theory.

• Fluent in foreign languages: Spanish, Chinese, and Polish.

• Project management experience and demonstrated application of project management tools.

 

Required Education:

• BS in Engineering

 

 

Travel Requirements:

• 25% on average depending on the project requirements. Includes international travel.
