Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.
Purpose of Position:
Digital Transformation Intern will work closely with our experienced PLC and SCADA engineers, participating in projects aimed at demonstrating the value of digital transformation within our manufacturing processes, by exploring Industry 4.0 solutions, IoT industrial devices and machine learning to further enhance our operations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Industry 4.0 Project: Collaborate with our team of experienced PLC and SCADA engineers in an industry 4.0 research project developing proof of concept for new technologies such as IoT Sensors, SCADA configuration, advance analytics and machine learning to collect and analyze real-time data from manufacturing operations.
- Documentation: Document project activities, methodologies, and outcomes, providing clear and comprehensive records of the work performed during the internship.
- Presentation and Reporting: Prepare and present findings, insights, and outcomes to the team and management to demonstrate the value added through digital transformation projects.
Education and Experience:
- Currently enrolled in a college program related to engineering, Automation, Computer Science, Electrical or similar major.
- At least 2 years of related coursework.
Required Skills:
- Basic programming skills (Python, R, C# or similar) and data analysis knowledge (coursework or personal projects).
- Strong interest in manufacturing, industrial automation, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), Internet of Things (IoT), and machine learning.
- Motivated self-starter with independent learning style
- Eagerness to learn and a proactive attitude.
- Ability to adapt and work in a dynamic manufacturing environment.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
Desired Qualifications:
- Familiar with sensor technologies and their implementation.
- Familiar with IEC 1131 programming languages (ladder, ST, FBD, SFC, IL)
- Familiar with PLCs (i.e., AB, Omron, Siemens, Etc.) and SCADA systems (iFix, Ignition).

The range for this position is $1,519.00 - $3,074.00 biweekly. Starting pay for the successful applicant is prescribed based on geographic location, nature of position, and year in school.
