Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.
Scope of Position:
As a Controls Engineer intern you will work closely with our automation design team during the conception, build and debug of high-speed process equipment. You will apply controls theory to solve challenging process control and monitoring problems.

Required Qualifications:
- Pursuing Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology
- Basic project management skills (planning, resource management, conflict resolution, able to meet deadlines)
- Basic problem solving and decision-making skills demonstrated by the use of advanced data analysis.
Day to Day Responsibilities:
- Work collaboratively with cross-functional teams to translate process requirements into controls designs and methodologies to ensure process quality – create control logic.
- Design wiring schematics and build functioning control cabinets. Produce appropriate documentation of controls architecture to facilitate clear communication of requirements to internal and external resources.
- Perform safety analyses and compliance assessments via identification of key risks and issues to comply with applicable standards, policies, and regulatory requirements.
- Work with mechanical designers and controls technicians to resolve autonomous system issues.
- Design and implement test plans to validate that equipment meets functional requirements and prepare written reports summarizing findings.
Desired Skills:
- Experience with Cable Assembly manufacturing processes and products.
- Experience writing code for autonomous systems.
- Experience with PLCs – writing code and debugging.
- Established relationships with multiple functional groups in global locations.
Soft Skills:
- Proficient in the use of MS Office (Excel, Word, Project, PowerPoint)
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
- Ability to communicate effectively to internal and external customers and within multi-national groups
- Ability to clearly express technical ideas
- Ability to influence outside of direct reporting structure
- High initiative, able to work with minimal direction.

The range for this position is $1,635.00 - $3,185.00 biweekly. Starting pay for the successful applicant is prescribed based on geographic location, nature of position, and year in school.
