Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.
Role Purpose
The Environmental Engineer will report to the EH&S Manager and is accountable for providing professional technical support in the implementation of environmental strategies to reduce environmental impacts, minimize risk, and to ensure environmental compliance with applicable regulatory and corporate requirements. This position will focus primarily on environmental compliance programs, including hazardous waste, stormwater monitoring, iso 14001 and sustainability reporting. Works on assignments that are complex in nature where considerable judgment and initiative are required in resolving problems and making recommendations. May determine methods and procedures on new assignments and may provide guidance to other personnel.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintains current knowledge of federal, state, and local EH&S regulations impacting air, water, and waste.
- Oversee all compliance requirements with environmental standards and expectations to include: monitoring, reporting and recordkeeping systems for compliance assurance.
- Direct and guide the implementation of the environmental management system (ISO 14001 system).
- Direct environmental assessments and implement containment actions that will identify, evaluate, and prevent non-compliance conditions and acts.
- Review projects, plans, specifications, and purchases to verify environmental issues are considered and addressed in a proactive manner
- Conduct facility audits, complete sampling as required by regulation (some may be outside of normal working hours)
- Maintain and support improvements to the site waste and recycling programs including area audits and metrics tracking
- Manage the site hazardous waste program, including waste shipments
- Participate in development and deployment of emergency services, facility auditing, incident investigation, potential problem exploration, potential hazard assessments, risk assessments and others.
- Provide training on policies and procedures with the workforce to ensure uniform compliance regarding environmental initiatives.
- Comprehend impact of manufacturing process and equipment as it applies to environmental impacts and compliance.
- Comprehend environmental permit needs and data generated to prepare permits.
- Guide dangerous goods program for the facility.
- Coordinate and communicate reporting, tracking, and trends of environmental incidents.
- Sponsors the EH&S Manager with the development of annual environmental plans including short term and long-term goals, objectives, targets, training, audits, etc.
- Manages Site Industrial Hygiene Plan
Soft Skills:
- Strong social skills.
- Effective at speaking across varying payroll levels.
- Ability to listen to and gain process comprehension from supervisors, peers, and operators.
Experiences/Education - Required
- Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Management, or related discipline in Engineering, or related subject.
- 1+ years of environmental experience.
- Knowledge of EPA regulations – CAA, CWA, RCRA, SPCC, and EPCRA.
- Knowledge of Spill Management/Response
- Knowledge of Hazardous Waste Management
- Broad comprehension of environmental rules and regulations.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Problem solving skills.
- Intermediate level of knowledge using standard Microsoft desktop applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, & Outlook).
Experiences/Education - Desired
- 3+ years of environmental experience
- Benchmark Gensuite data platform.
- SharePoint.

The range for this position is $73,310.00 - $100,801.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education. The benefits available for this position are dependent on hours worked and may include medical, dental, vision, 401(k) plan, pension plan, life insurance coverage, disability benefits, and PTO.
