Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Role Purpose

The position is responsible for the design of cable processing tooling and equipment in addition to the purchase, assembly, fabrication, and verification of the equipment on a manufacturing or a development line. Specific items that are designed, purchased or modified include, but are not limited to, wire payoffs, crosshead design and extrusion tooling, powder application, cable jacket removal, yarn spinners, LASER printers, measurement equipment, and ink jet printers. The position would require team work as well as individual work to accomplish the tasks in a timely manner. In this role the individual will become an integral contributor to multiple project teams developing innovative new products and processes at a rapid pace. They will develop a deep fundamental understanding of the function and performance aspects of our products and processes and interpret a wide range of experimental data to optimize equipment, process, and product design variables. They will generate intellectual property and become the subject matter expert for their newly developed equipment and processes.  They will develop a support network of experts, makers, doers, and decision-makers as they grow to become a vital contributor to our competitive success.  The position would require the ability to establish a mechanistic understanding by applying the fundamentals of design and engineering, the ability to think independently and problem solve paired with a strong work ethic and desire to learn is imperative.

Travel & Work Hours

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time:

  • Basic work hours are 40hrs/week; 8am-5pm

Experience & Education

 

  • BS Mechanical Engineering or equivalent degree.
  • Minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience
  • Familiarity with fabrication techniques (machining, forming, welding, wire EDM, etc.) to ensure that the equipment can be made in a cost-effective manner.
  • Familiarity with Manufacturing techniques, GD&T and drafting standards
  • CAD part and assembly modeling and design experience. Drafting skills & familiarity with Autodesk Inventor is a plus.
  • Technical design of mechanical components and assemblies in an industrial environment
  • Modification of the equipment design based off of data analysis.
  • Individual must be capable of executing project assignments in a team-based environment with minimal supervision.
  • Experience with automation and electromechanical systems is a plus.
  • FEA skills a plus
  • Strong written and communication skills

The range for this position is  $77,078.00   -  $105,983.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education. The benefits available for this position are dependent on hours worked and may include medical, dental, vision, 401(k) plan, pension plan, life insurance coverage, disability benefits, and PTO.
