Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.
Role Purpose
Corning is seeking an experienced engineering leader to join our Optical Communications team as Manager, Flame Retardant Cable Development. In this role, you will lead a team of cable development engineers through the full product lifecycle — from concept to production release — collaborating across Technology, Market Development, and Manufacturing to deliver innovative, high-performance fiber optic cable solutions that meet evolving customer and regulatory demands across North America.
Key Responsibilities
Lead, mentor, and develop a team responsible for flame retardant (FR) cable design, prototyping, design verification, qualification, and production release
Collaborate with Market Development, Technology, Project Management, and Product Line Management (PLM) teams to identify cable development needs and align projects with business objectives
Drive the full development lifecycle of FR cables — including distribution, ribbon, and loose tube designs — from concept to production, meeting customer timelines and performance, reliability, and cost targets
Partner with manufacturing, research, and development teams to resolve quality, cost, delivery, and safety challenges; leverage modeling and artificial intelligence (AI) tools to accelerate development timelines
Lead innovation efforts through intellectual property (IP) creation, awareness of emerging FR materials technologies, global cable standardization collaboration, and team resource management including hiring, performance development, and training
Experiences/Education - Required
Bachelor's degree
Extensive experience in extrusion and flame retardant cable design
Demonstrated project management experience
minimum of 5 years supervisory or people management experience
Expertise in materials selection, processing, and characterization, including an understanding of material property drivers in flame testing performance
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, SharePoint)
Travel: Up to 40%
Experiences/Education - Desired
Master's degree or Ph.D. in a relevant technical field
Experience in a product development environment
Knowledge of global cable burn tests and international FR standards
Ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously in a dynamic environment
Strong organizational and team coordination skills

The range for this position is $143,473.00 - $197,276.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.
