Role Purpose:

  • The IT Controls/Software Engineer role will support the OFC cables plants by partnering with the plant support groups to identify new IT technologies and uncover disruptive IT trends to benefit the cable businesses.
  • This person will help lead or participate in projects that will demonstrate and industrialize new IT and Controls tools and technologies, and deploy them in the cabling plants.  This would also include the enhancements to our current systems in a quest to always make things better.
  • The person in this role will assist in managing IT systems that interface directly with the plant floor controls systems. In this capacity, the person will become a technical expert for software systems such as the machine data collection/analysis system and SCADA systems and will be at least partially responsible for setting up and configuring these systems utilized at the cables plants.
  • This person will work with Maintenance and Facilities to help provide data acquisition solutions for alarming, trending, and monitoring important manufacturing line and facilities data.
  • This person will be a point of contact for the plants for all servers and systems that interface with the production lines.
  • This person will serve as a technical expert in providing data and solutions to solve complex process and controls problems.
  • This person will become the primary person to oversee disaster recovery planning for the IT systems in the cables plants. They will be able to understand how the plan should be applied to each cable plant and drive consistency between them. In addition, this person will ensure that the requisite testing and other reviews are completed to comply with our policies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Understand the IT capabilities and architecture within the OFC cable plants and be able to be an expert consultant with the engineering and operations groups at the plants regarding these systems.
  • Identify new IT technologies that can be used in the plants and leverage those systems to offer innovative solutions for the plants.

To do this, the person must:

  • Work with vendors to articulate the plant’s needs
  • Be proficient in using and administering plant systems such as IFix, OSI-PI, and GE Plant Applications that touch all the manufacturing lines.
  • Relate a vendor’s or service provider’s capabilities to the plants
  • Have good basic programming skills
  • Become the point of contact for IT disaster recovery plans within the cable plants. They will be responsible for understanding the requirements stated in Corning’s policy and how those disaster recovery requirements need to be implemented and maintained in the plants.
  • Drive standardization between the cable plants
  • Work with IT service lines, business unit groups, and managed services partners to ensure best practices are followed.
  • Balance demands between an immediate fix and a sustainable long term process.


  • Bachelors in Computer Science or Engineering, or ideally, the person will be an engineering major with computer skills.

Years of Experience:

  • 2 years of experience (desired) Competencies

Technical Skills:

General understanding of the following

  • OSI PI Data Collection and Analysis
  • SCADA Systems (iFix and Wonderware)
  • Server setup and general management concepts
  • Database configuration
  • Database queries
  • Basic .Net (VB, C#)

Other Skills

  • Familiarity or technical curiosity with manufacturing systems
