Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

 

PURPOSE OF POSITION:

 

  1. Plan, direct, and continually improve Industrial Engineering / Lean Manufacturing activities and implement concepts in Optical Fiber and Cable (OFC) facilities as needed based on priority.
  2. Develop plant layouts (new & existing facilities) and implement IE/Lean concepts such as 5S, Kaizen, value stream mapping, capacity modeling, load smoothing, & one-piece flow in order to improve performance in quality, cost, delivery, morale, & safety. Communicate and work with corporate & other Corning locations to establish similar goals/objectives, promote best practice proliferation, & ensure inter-plant consistency of systems and procedures.
  3. Develop and implement systems, procedures, and projects required to successfully accomplish site, divisional, and corporate goals and objectives.

 

 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

 • New and existing facility layout development for Lean Flow and operations. Liaison between project team, plant receivers, & EPCM design team (for construction projects) to ensure plant needs are met.

 • Clearly communicate the IE/Lean philosophy, vision, & expectations.

 • Deliver & improve the process of training and development of OFC regarding Lean concepts.

 • Assist with development & implementation of a strategy for a self-sustaining Lean program including metrics that support lean manufacturing philosophy.

 • Lead value stream mapping & capacity modeling exercises to identify & document opportunities to improve the business (Current & Future State). Develop & execute project plans in order to achieve the Future State.

 • Facilitate continuous improvement activities via Kaizens, Kaizen Blitzes, 5S, Time Studies, DMAIC projects & through daily interaction with site employees. Facilitate leadership and others “going to Gemba” to truly understand and implement improvements.

 • Develop & implement sustainable 5S, visual control, Load Smoothing, Single Minute Exchange of Die (SMED), Total Productive Maintenance (TPM), & other Lean programs.

 • Facilitate the planning and implementation of workplace flow & layout, as well as equipment installations, modifications, and moves according to Lean concepts.

 • Document work done & results achieved. Develop & update standards as changes are made. Ensure PDCA cycles are followed.

 • Identify & horizontally deploy benchmark opportunities and develop partnerships with appropriate parties.

 • Facilitate/implement Lean projects at any OFC location in order to provide continuous improvement with the largest impact. Travel expected to be less than 30% but could include international trips.

 • Plan and achieve divisional budget objectives for expense and capital items.

 • Integration of IE/Lean concepts into existing systems (eg job descriptions, objectives, training systems, technology development, supply chain)

 • Personal computer (word processing, spreadsheet, database extraction/analysis, AutoCAD)

 • Blueprints.

 

 TWO MAJOR DECISIONS INDICATIVE OF THIS POSITION:

 

 • Decisions regarding load smoothing, scheduling, inventory levels, & other Lean concepts. Decisions impact on time shipments.

 • Decisions regarding capacity models, equipment layout, & staffing. Decisions impact quality, cost, delivery, morale, & safety.

 • Indirect reporting to and with (facilitates) improvement activities with employees of all pay types and grades on site & at other sites within OFC.

EDUCATION AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS:

 

  • BS degree in Industrial Engineering or other related engineering degree with experience in the field of IE/Lean required.
  •  Knowledge of manufacturing methods, systems, and production processes required.
  •  Excellent inter-personal and communication skills (written and verbal) required.
  •  Must be process/results oriented and have organizational and attention-to-detail abilities.
  •  Must have working knowledge of personal computers including (e.g., word processing, spreadsheet, AutoCAD, analysis of manufacturing data).
  •  Previous supervisory experience, Facilities/Maintenance experience, & Operations experience preferred.
  •  Knowledge of blueprints and shop equipment helpful.
