Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.
Role Purpose
Development engineering position focused on early-stage development of innovative laser processes. You will be responsible for leading technical development of new processes and products.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop new processes or improve existing processes with a focus on laser processing and automation that could be deployed across Corning facilities worldwide.
- Lead early-stage process development efforts for new and existing products
- Build benchtop semi-automated prototype stations that demonstrate and develop new processes.
- Employ understanding of laser theory, laser platforms and laser operation to solve challenging process problems.
- Determine operational ranges for parameters defined as a result of experimental execution.
- Assist in the development of project plans and execute task plans to meet promised deliverables.
- Establish process development technical guidelines.
- Work with local plant process experts and global SMEs on new processes innovation.
- Solve problems and improve processes based on fundamental understanding.
- Ensure that manufacturing requirements are properly developed and documented in conjunction with appropriate manufacturing, production, and engineering personnel.
- Provide information and technical assistance to manufacturing, engineering, and production personnel as required.
- Structured problem-solving methods such as KT, Designed Experimentation, and Six Sigma.
- Implement Process Control and Process Discipline systems into manufacturing operations.
- Analyze process data using statistical tools (e.g. pareto, regression, time charting, analysis of variance, gauge R&R, etc.).
- Review and interpret data to make recommendations on immediate actions, long term corrective actions, follow-up experiments, etc.
- Troubleshoot equipment and processes.
- Document all new ideas for possible patent submission.
- Design and test tooling and fixtures for development of new products from prototyping to high volume production.
Experiences/Education - Required
- Bachelor of Science in Photonics Engineering, Physics or Engineering Equivalent
- Understanding of laser theory, laser platforms and light material interaction
- Proficient use of MS Office (Excel, Word, Project, PowerPoint)
- Good communication and analytical skills
- Desire to learn new technologies and apply them
Experiences/Education - Desired
- Master’s degree or higher (a PLUS)
- 3+ years of experience working with laser setups and processing
- Automation design (both process and station)
- Solidworks or Creo 3D modeling
- High level understanding of controls (component and programming)
- Problem solving – Experience in the use of DOE, SPC, Six Sigma and other process control/ analysis techniques.
- Capable of performing complex data analysis using MS excel (SPC), or Minitab, Jump software
- Familiar with fiber optic theory (a PLUS)
- Familiar with optics and light propagation (a PLUS)

The range for this position is $77,078.00 - $105,983.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education. The benefits available for this position are dependent on hours worked and may include medical, dental, vision, 401(k) plan, pension plan, life insurance coverage, disability benefits, and PTO.
