Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Role Purpose

Lead Lean Manufacturing initiatives at the site. Assist in implementation of Lean fundamental competencies (Value Stream Maps, Visual Performance Metrics, Kanban, SMED, Work Balancing, Kaizen, Work Standardization, Gemba Engagement) in order to continually improve performance in safety, quality, cost, delivery, morale, and innovation. Partner with operations to decrease cost of manufacturing, increase efficiencies, and drive waste from the production steps.

Key Responsibilities

  • Directly responsible for performing work in a safe manner & maintaining a safe work environment. Responsible for his/her safety, as well as that of others that may be at the facility, whether working or visiting. Is responsible for observing safe work practices and being proactive for reporting/fixing any unsafe conditions.
  • Partner with Ops, Supply Chain, Maintenance and other support group to develop tools to drive operations efficiency and cost reducing projects.
  • Implement strategy for the lean program. Track metrics to verify effectiveness of improvements. Develop/update standards to ensure sustainability & improvement as well as linkage with sister plants and divisional initiatives.
  • Develop and enable ongoing skill development to provide current lean principles, teaching, and methods. Educate and coach plant employees on Lean philosophy, vision, concepts, & expectations.
  • Drive implementation of the Lean strategy & process for Lean training and development (emphasis should be on coaching teams to accept responsibility and solve their own problems). Overcome paradigms and obstacles to establish a Lean culture.
  • Within the Operations Function, drive the implementation of Lean manufacturing utilizing proven methodologies and tools.
  • Lead value stream mapping exercises to identify, document, & execute opportunities to improve the business (cycle time, capacity, & cost) from current to future state.
  • Direct the planning and implementation of continuous improvement activities via Kaizen. Facilitate leadership and others “going to gemba” to truly understand & implement improvement.
  • Develop & implement sustainable 5S, Visual Control, Load Smoothing, Single Minute Exchange of Die (SMED), Kanban, & other programs.
  • Facilitate the planning & implementation of workplace flow/layout, as well as equipment installations, modifications, and moves according to Lean concepts.
  • Identify & horizontally deploy benchmark opportunities between Corning locations.
  • Travel expected to be less than 20% to other sister plants to facilitate best practice migration.

Education/Experience - Required

  • 2-year degree in a technical field OR High School Diploma and 1 year of relevant work experience
  • Demonstrated leadership and subject-matter-expertise in Lean Manufacturing, analytical, & problem solving skills.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing methods, systems, and production processes.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal) with ability to present ideas, opinions and data to gain understanding consensus, and support.
  • Ability to create vision, case for change, and communicate vertically and horizontally within the organization
  • Process/results oriented with organizational and attention-to-detail abilities.

The range for this position is $59,300.00 - $81,538.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education. The benefits available for this position are dependent on hours worked and may include medical, dental, vision, 401(k) plan, pension plan, life insurance coverage, disability benefits, and PTO.
