Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

 

Scope of Position:

Apply knowledge of engineering principles in pursuit of developing knowledge and skills in metrology and measurements. Provide measurement services and expertise in metrology and measurements for manufacturing / research and development organizations.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Assist engineering staff in performance of duties in support of the business.
  • Perform precision measurements of various parts / assemblies relating to fiber optic connectivity using a variety of dimensional metrology and fiber optic measurement instruments including: CMM, coherence scanning optical profilometer, 1D measuring machine, stylus profilometer, various gages and hand tools, insertion loss test equipment, optical microscopes, etc.
  • Design and execute experiments for establishing measurement uncertainty.
  • Design and execute experiments to characterize system capabilities and performance.
  • Perform data analysis including basic statistics (average, max, min, standard deviation, etc.) regression analysis, ANOVA, etc.
  • Modify and create system documentation.

 

Required Qualification:

  • Enrolled in BS, MS or PHD Engineering program in Mechanical, Electrical, Optics, or Physics
  • Strong desire for technical growth.
  • Understanding of basic metrology principles.
  • Strong analytical problem-solving skills.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to effectively present information.

 

Desired Skills:

  • Experience with CMM programming and optical profilometry.
  • Experience with basic metrology equipment (micrometers, height gages, profilometers, etc.) and principles.
  • Experience with measurement uncertainty
  • Experience with the setup and implementation of software and hardware for measurement systems.
  • Experience with fiber optics testing equipment.

​The range for this position is $1,519.00 - $3,074.00 biweekly.  Starting pay for the successful applicant is prescribed based on geographic location, nature of position, and year in school.
