Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.


Scope of Position: This position requires demonstrated skills in manufacturing engineering, project management and team leadership to plan, direct and coordinate measurement equipment and process improvement development, with understanding in how to integrate measurement technologies and processes and interact with research, development, engineering and manufacturing groups to enable Corning, Inc. to develop robust next generation process equipment solutions. Responsibilities include facilitating and leading the creation of project definitions, detailed project plans, proposing budgets, staffing and equipment needs to stakeholders. The successful candidate will ensure and oversee projects are completed in timely fashion and within budget, as well as designate the proper resources, monitor progress and maintain constant communication with stakeholders, leading engineering project teams into the final implementation of the solution in the manufacturing floor.


Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with leadership of large, highly matrixed multi-national project teams with experienced professionals (research, technology, division, manufacturing, etc.) to track technology development progress, forecast technology development needs, own measurement technology roadmaps in Division, establish manufacturing requirements and ensure systems are developed to meet manufacturing needs including the development to appropriate standards.
  • For department initiatives, drive execution of solution identification, design, testing, and implementation of measurement and inspection solutions and SW systems industrialization and deployment. Work with product engineering and quality groups to get internal and external VOC to determine a solution for measurements systems to satisfy requirements. Determine value prop and financial justification.
  • Manage the global measurement development portfolio for division engineering focusing on stage 1-3 technology.
  • Work with the NPI group to define measurement technology, system software, and resource requirements in early stage. Establish transfer criteria from early to mid/late innovation stage.
  • Collect competitive intelligence and industry forecasting information as it pertains to measurements and inspection equipment. Host an OCS workshop to exchange information and develop a measurements strategy. Run a capital workshops for global measurements on biannual basis.
  • Project leadership responsibility for assigned projects from AR development through successful execution and transfer to manufacturing.
  • Development and leadership of effective project teams. Establish roles, responsibilities and competencies required for the project. Builds an effective project team utilizing internal and external personnel resources with the ability to operate and supervise matrixed organizations from R&D to manufacturing deployment. Establish receivership requirements for project into Division.
  • Conduct project meetings and document key issues, action items and decisions. Communicates and provides guidance to project team members based on organizational goals and company policy.
  • Interact regularly with project sponsors and stakeholders, provide periodic project updates to customer and management, communicates project goals, objectives, key status information and overall impact of the project effectively with project team members.
  • Use appropriate project management strategies for implementing requirements across a broad range of programs and initiatives. Set project priorities and tactical direction for the team based on impact to business results, constrained resources and timelines required to manage and support a broad range of manufacturing projects.
  • Effectively implements all phases of project management methodologies including initiation, planning, implementation and control, and close-out.
  • Lead and run project teams responsible to new OCS measurement process technologies, support test capacity expansions, and rebuilds in support of overall business objectives.
  • Satisfaction of key project objectives (safety, quality / performance, schedule, spending).
  • Define and successfully execute project plans that support overall business objectives.


Required Education, Years and Area of Experience:

  • Minimum of a BS Engineering degree or equivalent experience.
  • 3+ years of experience as a Project Engineer or Project Manager with proven track record successfully delivering complex engineering projects involving multiple technologies, new process transfer to high volume manufacturing, and significant financial or strategic impact to the business.

  • Able to work across Development, Engineering, and Manufacturing functions as required to deliver project objectives.
  • Effectively communicate project status, issues, risks, and results.
  • Experienced at influencing technical decisions. Ability to interface with senior management and provide clear concise program strategies, resources needs, and program updates.
  • Track record of delivering solutions using a structured risk management and projects development process.
  • Work effectively in a matrix team environment.
  • Advanced English level is required.


Desired Skills:

  • Some experience and applied knowledge of fiber optic cable assembly measurement equipment related but not limited to: optical attenuation, reflectometry, surface profile interferometry, and video microscopy (end-face inspection).
  • Understanding of manufacturing principals and experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Demonstrated excellence in science and engineering fundamentals, including demonstrated application of the scientific method, Lean methodologies, and DMAIC tools.
  • Demonstrated application of measurement science in the fields of fiber optics, surface profiling interferometry, microscopy, optical refractometry and/or other optical or physical measurement disciplines.
  • Some understanding with computer-based measurement or automation equipment, design, setup, support and data systems architecture.


Travel Requirements: 10-40% travel domestic and international (USA, Mexico, Poland)


Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time: 40+ hours/week
