Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

 

Scope of Position: Internship with the Corning Optical Connectivity Solutions Division Engineering organization supporting projects focused on new product and process development and introduction. The intern will gain experience in product and process development and methodologies in new product introduction

 

Day to Day Responsibilities:

As part of a project team you will:

  • Contribute to the development of new processes necessary to deliver new products to our customer base
  • Contribute to the development of attributes of new products
  • Develop and execute experiments focused on improving the team’s understanding of product and process performance
  • Develop and execute product evaluation studies and test of conformance
  • Analyze experimental data to establish quantitative conclusions
  • Generate reports representing experimental or product testing results

 

Hours of work/work schedule/flextime: Basic work hours are 40hrs/week; 8am-5pm

 

Education and Experience:

  • Currently enrolled in a mechanical, materials science, or electrical engineering, or physics degree program.
  • At least 3 years of related coursework in the physics or engineering curriculum required.
  • Current pursuit of a master’s degree is preferred.

 

Required Skills:

  • Ability to think analytically and creatively when faced with a scientific or engineering problem
  • Ability to work effectively both with a project team or independently
  • Desire to learn quickly while applying new skills to contribute to the objective of the project team
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to analyze data using statistical methods and effectively communicate conclusions
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office suite

 

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience using CAD software, preferably SolidWorks or Creo
  • Prior knowledge of or course work in fiber optic physics
  • Prior industry experience
