Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

 

Scope of Position:

Under the supervision of a controls engineer, assist with automation projects in the area of optical fiber cable manufacturing. A controls subproject within a larger project may be provided that can be designed, built, installed and tested within the time window of the Summer Internship.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Assist Corning Optical Communications with electrical/controls engineering activities including, but not limited to, the following: 
  • Hardware/component selection and development
  • Software programming and testing  
  • Electrical wiring schematics
  • Collecting and Analyzing Data

 

Educational Requirement:

  • Successful completion of Sophomore level coursework or above by May 2021 with a Major in:
  • Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering Technology, Mechatronics or Computer Science.
  • Coursework in Mathematics and Physics.
  • Coursework and Labs in Electrical/Electronics Engineering.
  • Basic understanding of digital and analog instrumentation, PLC’s, and HMI’s.
  • Exposure to computer programming with VB or C++.
  • Awareness of communication protocols (EthernetIP, MODBUS/TCP, etc)
  • Experience/coursework with Microsoft Office (i.e. Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and CAD/Schematic Capture (AutoCAD)

 

Experience desired:

  • Previous experience/coursework troubleshooting automated machinery.
  • Previous experience/coursework with electro-mechanical sensors and actuators (i.e. Temperature Devices – TC’s, Pressure Devices – Switches/Transducers, Solenoid Valves, Limit/Level Switches, Pneumatics, Motors, etc)
  • Sufficient mathematical and hands-on testing skills to appropriately operate equipment safely and accurately.
  • Technical aptitude necessary to perform the tasks and engage as a team player that is detail oriented, communicates well, and follows through.

 

Hours of work

  • M-F 8am-5pm
