Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Scope of Position

The purpose of this position is to collaborate, design, validate and implement packaging solutions that encompass 3 key areas around cost savings, sustainability and meeting customer requirements.  All of these areas are integral parts of the COC Packaging Program within Corning and include innovation, standardization and optimization of existing packaging solutions to deliver improvements in cost, capability, and quality, and providing manufacturing and commercial support for packaging related issues.  The Packaging Engineer will collaborate with internal and external partners to identify appropriate packaging materials and develop packaging designs that meet specifications and add value to customer requirements. The Packaging Engineer will work with internal cross functional team partnerships - including Product Line Management, Sourcing, Manufacturing/ Engineering, Supply Chain, Logistics, Sustainability, customer facing roles and key packaging suppliers to achieve functional packaging and support Corning COC Packaging Program KPIs. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Optimize total packaging cost across including but not limited to materials, manufacturing, product and customer requirements, distribution, transportation, and sustainability.
  • Serve as the technical subject matter expert for packaging materials and design, partnering with manufacturing, quality, logistics, and commercial teams.
  • Identify and implement packaging improvements opportunities and new technologies that enhance cost effectiveness, quality, value to the customer and capability for new and existing products.
  • Define and develop new package requirements for the implementation of innovative and cost-effective packaging solutions working with paper corrugate, plastics, reels (plastic, fiberboard, steel, or wood), and pallets.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation, including specifications, test reports, project plans, 1-page proposals and project summaries.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Packaging Engineering or Mechanical Engineering
  • A minimum of 3+ years of experience in packaging design and development
  • Demonstrated knowledge of packaging processes, designs, materials and manufacturing processes
  • Strong communication skills
  • Project management skills
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Experience in technical testing and evaluating packaging materials and designs.

Travel Requirements

  • Up to 25% including international travel.

The range for this position is $84,873.00 - $116,701.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.
