Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

 

Scope of Position: Apply knowledge of engineering principles and practices to effectively accomplish technical assignments and projects. Follow guidance of senior engineers to make decisions based upon sound engineering and scientific methods. Actively participates within and beyond department boundaries to resolve important process and product issues. Enhance manufacturing capabilities through the implementation of new ideas and methods. Independently execute projects to fulfill department goals and objectives.

 

Responsible for:

  • Technical development of new products/processes under some guidance from senior level engineers.
  • Improving processes and solving problems based on fundamental understanding gained through the use of the scientific method and DOE.
  • Reducing defects by eliminating root causes.
  • Application of DMAIC and advanced statistical tools.
  • Improving manufacturing cost, quality, uptime, yields, cycle time, and safety.
  • Evaluating new raw materials, defining process parameters, and developing new processing equipment.
  • Documenting experiment planning and process changes.
  • Projects could support OFC division engineering or OFC research and development.

 

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop new processes or improve existing processes with a focus on automation at Corning facilities worldwide.
  • Create operational ranges for parameters defined as a result of experimental development.
  • Assist in the development of project plans and execute schedules to meet promised deliverables.
  • Work with local plant process experts and global SMEs on new processes innovation.
  • Solve problems and improve processes based on fundamental understanding.
  • Ensure that manufacturing requirements are properly developed and documented in conjunction with appropriate manufacturing, production, and engineering personnel.
  • Provide information and technical assistance to manufacturing, engineering, and production personnel as required.
  • Develop documentation for each project and work with associated plant personnel to implement it.
  • Structured problem-solving methods such as KT, Designed Experimentation, and Six Sigma.
  • Implement Process Control and Process Discipline systems into manufacturing operations.
  • Analyze process data using statistical tools (e.g. pareto, regression, time charting, analysis of variance, gauge R&R, etc.).
  • Review and interpret data to make recommendations on immediate actions, long term corrective actions, follow-up experiments, etc.
  • Troubleshoot equipment and processes.
  • Document all new ideas for possible patent submission.
  • Design and test tooling and fixtures for development of new products from prototyping to high volume production.

 

 

Required Skills:

  • Pursuing Mechanical Engineering Degree or related discipline
  • Proficient use of MS Office (Excel, Word, Project, PowerPoint)
  • Good communication and analytical skills
  • Desire to learn new technologies and apply them

 

Desired Skills:

  • Solidworks or Inventor 3D modeling
  • Problem solving
  • Some level of experience in the use of DOE, SPC, Six Sigma and other process control/ analysis techniques.
  • Capable of performing complex data analysis using MS excel (SPC), or Minitab software
  • Familiar with fiber optic theory (a PLUS)
  • Familiar with polymer extrusion (a PLUS)

This position does not support immigration sponsorship.  


​The range for this position is $1,519.00 - $3,074.00 biweekly.  Starting pay for the successful applicant is prescribed based on geographic location, nature of position, and year in school.
