Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

 

Role Purpose

The successful candidate will be responsible for development of new extrusion processes and cable products.  Specific knowledge of fiber optic cable processes would be helpful, although not required.

 

Candidate is expected to apply expertise in engineering to support new product and process development activities. Candidate will establish tooling, equipment, and process design requirements, and develop machine set points for ideal manufacturing conditions.  Experience in design and development of a continuous manufacturing process along with the layout and equipment is desirable. This includes creating and setting specifications, developing, implementing, and monitoring this equipment and process as part of the manufacturing system.

Day to Day Responsibilities

  • Participate in project teams with daily work defined by Project Lead and/or Process Engineer with work targeted at developing new products, processes, and new measurement systems to solve customer problems while creating intellectual property to deliver value for Corning.
  • Conduct research, propose experiments, and analyze data to test hypotheses to enhance understanding of products and processes and to provide Corning with inventive solutions.
  • Data collection, interpretation, communicating and documenting results in technical reports and presentations.
  • Balance hands-on work-related activities with technical leadership related activities.
  • Collaborate with research and manufacturing functions throughout product development cycle.

 

Requirements

  • Individual must be capable of executing project assignments in a team-based environment.
  • Strong problem solver utilizing structured techniques.
  • Demonstrated, applied mechanical aptitude.
  • Ability to share and clearly express technical ideas.
  • Ability to communicate effectively within a global work environment with solid written and verbal skills, with experience with Microsoft Office tools.
  • Must be available for 10 weeks during Summer 2025 (May-August 2025) with a graduation date of December 2025 or later

Education and Experience

  • Currently enrolled in accredited Mechanical, Material, Chemical Engineering or equivalent degree.

 

Desired Skills

  • Experience with mechanical or chemical testing of materials and analyzing results.
  • Computer aided design for mechanical drawings
  • Continuous process design and development experience
  • Capable of performing complex data analysis using MS excel (SPC), or statistical software such as JMP or Minitab.

​The range for this position is $1,635.00 - $3,185.00 biweekly.  Starting pay for the successful applicant is prescribed based on geographic location, nature of position, and year in school.
