Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop comprehensive project plans to ensure project objectives are met, and ensure adherence to the project plan. Ensure or secure adequate resources to enable the success of projects.
  • Manage the relationship with all internal and external stakeholders to ensure agreement on project deliverables and ability to resource to achieve those deliverables.
  • Lead the development, submittal, and approval of project planning and funding through the development of the project Appropriation Request (AR).
  • Regularly communicate program or project status. Prepare and give presentations about the programs or projects as required to support the project.
  • Develop a clear understanding and definition of project requirements. This includes technical requirements, project boundaries such as scope, cost, and timing.
  • For new product and process introduction projects, ensure effective focus on design for manufacturability by the development team. Ensure suitable risk analyses are completed and factored into project plans, that PQA integration occurs at appropriate stages, and clearly defined success metrics are used to guide ongoing Technology project participation prior to full hand off to manufacturing.
  • For cost improvement and plant to plant transfer projects, ensure full utilization of DMAIC or other project management methodologies to ensure customer needs are met in a timely and cost-effective fashion.
  • Ensure that the highest level of project safety standards is practiced and met. This includes all internal (Corning) and external (Contractors).
  • Use sound decision making processes and quality tools to develop a project plan (scope, budget, schedule, equipment concept) that satisfies business objectives
  • Support project team with executing required tasks hands-on, when needed
  • Track project spending to ensure overall satisfaction of overall project budget.
  • Manage multiple and a broad range of projects to meet business and corporate goals and objectives
  • No direct supervision of personnel, but provides leadership for project teams that will require use of influencing skills.


Travel Requirements (please note if international):

  • Expected travel is less than 10%.


Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time:

  • Standard hours are M-F, 8-5. Off-hour support may be required depending on the project.


Required years and area of experience: BS in an engineering discipline (mechanical, industrial, ceramic, materials, or chemical) along with:

  • Minimum of 5 years total of development, project management, manufacturing, and/or engineering experience


Required Skills:

  • Strong fundamental understanding of project management/execution
  • Demonstrated technical and project leadership experience with ability to achieve results with a cross functional organization/team
  • Demonstrated effectiveness at technical problem-solving and decision-making
  • Ability to successful manage multiple priorities through sound planning and organizing
  • Self-starter, able to function with a high level of independence and in team environments
  • Communicates effectively in writing and in a group setting
  • Technical competence in process engineering
  • Effective leadership, organization, and planning skills, with ability to handle changing priorities • Corning (or external) Green Belt DMAIC certification


Desired Skills:

  • 5+ years of experience in Project Management across large operational projects and new products / Stage Gate projects
  • Project Management Certification
  • Experience working with plastics extrusion and associated tooling, equipment, and materials
  • Corning (or external) Black Belt DMAIC certification
  • Demonstrated results developing and delivering step change innovations to manufacturing


Soft Skills:

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Be an effective communicator and able to deliver messages through presentations, written and verbal communication across all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to handle conflict and seek appropriate solutions
  • Self-motivated and self-sufficient to require minimal guidance from partners or supervisor to achieve project results
