Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.
Purpose of the Position:
The successful candidate will be responsible for the development of new processes, products and equipment using coating, standing and extrusion techniques. Candidate is expected to apply expertise in engineering to support new equipment and process development activities. Specific knowledge of fiber optic cable processes and/or polymeric materials is desired, although not required.
Day to Day Responsibilities:
- Participate collaboratively in project teams to develop new equipment and processes.
- Lead technical teams to develop understanding.
- Conduct research, propose experiments, and analyze data to test hypotheses and enhance understanding of equipment & processes.
- Provide Corning with inventive solutions toward new development efforts.
- Identify and investigate new processing techniques to develop innovative cable designs.
- Guide development technicians in the day-to-day activities needed to achieve milestones.
- Collaborate with research and manufacturing functions throughout product development cycle.
- Communicate and document results in technical reports and presentations
- Develop & maintain strong interaction with process development personnel located in US, Germany, Mexico, and Poland.
Education & Experience:
- BS in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or similar technical field (e.g., physics)
- MS or PhD is desirable
- 5 - 10+ years’ professional experience with extrusion, mechanical design or process development.
Required Skills:
- A functional knowledge of physical phenomena (statics and dynamics, heat and mass transfer, fluid mechanics, optics, etc.).
- The ability to work in cross functional engineering teams to create prototypes and industrial process design solutions.
- Individual must be capable of executing project assignments in a team-based environment with minimal supervision.
- Strong problem solver that uses engineering principles and structured techniques.
- Demonstrated, applied aptitude for mechanical manufacturing processes.
- Ability to clearly communicate technical content to broad audiences.
Desired Skills:
- Knowledge and experience with Optical Fiber/Cable process development or manufacturing.
- Development experience in Process or Product design.
- Experience in UV coatings, stranding or polymer extrusion processes.
- Capable of performing data analysis using statistical software (JMP, MiniTab, etc.)
- Experience with rigorous project management.
- Demonstrated use of process modeling or simulation software in the development of new processes / equipment.
- Proficient in DMAIC and MEE methodologies for problem solving.
Soft Skills:
- Positive attitude and a strong, independent work ethic.
- Ability to work interactively with, or manage, cross functional teams with ties to Research and Early-Stage Development and Manufacturing.
- A bias towards action: Personal initiative, results-driven and details-oriented.
- Good interpersonal and relationship building skills.

The range for this position is $96,991.00 - $133,363.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education. The benefits available for this position are dependent on hours worked and may include medical, dental, vision, 401(k) plan, pension plan, life insurance coverage, disability benefits, and PTO.
