Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

 

Looking for a Sr. Controls Technician with extensive automation and electrical experience to support the design, build, and commissioning of automation equipment within the OCS Technology Automation Development Group. This role works closely with controls engineers, mechanical engineers, and project teams to ensure machine functionality, troubleshoot electrical and controls issues, integrate components, and help drive equipment to successful operational readiness. The ideal candidate has strong technical judgment, deep practical experience with machine wiring and diagnostics, and the ability to work independently in a fast‑paced engineering environment.

 

As part of the OCS Technology Automation Development Group, the Sr. Controls Technician will play a key role in developing advanced automation solutions that support manufacturing innovation. This is a hands‑on position for a technician who enjoys solving complex problems, collaborating with engineers, and contributing to the build of high‑performance automated equipment.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Support the design, build, and commissioning of automation equipment from concept through full system operation.
  • Collaborate with controls engineers to develop and update electrical design packages, including schematics, panel layouts, bill of materials, and requisition documentation.
  • Review and incorporate redlines into electrical drawings, ensuring accuracy and compliance with design standards.
  • Identify, spec, and source electrical and controls components throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Participate in equipment wiring, panel builds, and I/O checkout during machine construction.
  • Work within a cross-functional group including project managers, mechanical engineers, toolmakers, programmers, and electrical-controls engineers to diagnose system issues and drive the development of a complete, functional solution.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • 7+ years of professional experience as an electrical or controls technician in an automation or industrial environment.
  • Associates or Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, or equivalent.
  • Strong ability to read, interpret, and update electrical schematics and wiring diagrams.
  • Solid understanding of electrical principles including power distribution, electrical machinery, and machine safety concepts.
  • Working knowledge of relevant electrical and safety standards (e.g., NFPA 70E, NEC, UL508A).
  • Experience working with industrial power systems up to 480 VAC.
  • Comfortable using hand tools, multimeters, and standard electrical test equipment.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to document work clearly.
  • Ability to work independently and make sound technical decisions.
  • Experience with lockout/tagout, and industrial safety systems.

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience in AutoCAD Electrical and AutoCAD Vault.
  • Experience in automation equipment assembly, machine wiring, and commissioning.
  • Familiarity with PLC hardware (Omron Sysmac Studio preferred), including I/O checkout and basic troubleshooting.
  • Experience with industrial communication networks (EtherCAT, Ethernet/IP, Serial, etc.).
  • Knowledge of servo drives, motion control hardware, sensors, and industrial instrumentation.

The range for this position is $70,719.00 - $97,239.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.
