Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.



The successful candidate will be responsible for development of new processes and products using extrusion and web processing techniques. Specific knowledge of the polymeric materials in fiber optic processes would be helpful, although not required. Candidate is expected to apply expertise in extrusion processing and/or product development to support or lead new product and process activities. Candidate needs to have experience in polymer processing, with the equipment used to manufacture cables or in development of new cable products. Candidate will perform and develop cable making techniques to support new cable development needs.


Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Participate in project teams, developing new products and processes
  • Conduct research, propose experiments and analyze data to test hypotheses to improve understanding of products and processes and to provide Corning with inventive solutions toward new development efforts
  • Identify and investigate new processing techniques to develop innovative cable designs.
  • Balance hands-on work related activities with technical leadership related activities
  • Collaborate with research and manufacturing functions throughout product development cycle
  • Guide test technicians to develop new test methods to simulate customer application spaces.
  • Communicate and document results in technical reports and presentations
  • Maintain strong interaction with polymer personnel located in US, Germany and Poland
  • Assist and/or lead product development projects (globally) to accomplish design and cost reduction goals
  • Interface with suppliers and procurement to develop state of the art equipment and processes with both existing and new polymeric materials.


Required Skills (These are skills that candidates MUST possess)

  • Knowledge of cable extrusion and/or web processing techniques.
  • Knowledge of polymeric materials such as polyolefins and/or filled polymers such as PVCs and LSZH materials.
  • Ability to perform statistical analysis to interpret experimental results
  • Individual must be capable of executing and leading project assignments in a team-based environment.
  • Proven written and verbal skills, with experience with Microsoft Office tools


Education and Experience (Minimum required for consideration)

  • MS in Mechanical, Chemical or Materials Engineering
  • PhD is desirable
  • 5 – 10 years professional experience with extrusion or web processing


Desired Skills (These are skills that candidates MAY posses)

  • Experience in computer aided design for mechanical drawings
  • Experience with rigorous project management

  • Good communication/presentation skills at multiple levels including teams/management/customers
  • Good facilitation and collaboration skills to enable ambiguous evaluations
  • A bias towards action: results-driven and details-oriented
  • Good interpersonal and relationship building skills
