Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Scope of Position:

 

*Lead cross functional project teams through the IPP / State Gate project management system. This includes project planning (timelines and milestones), execution of the project plan (coordinating experiments, documenting results, and adapting plans to learnings), managing the team (motivating the team to achieve project goals, gaining consensus, conflict resolution, recognizing excellence, etc.), and managing communication up and down the organization to stakeholders and steering team members.

 

Day to Day Responsibilities:

 

* Provide leadership of complex projects within Cable Technology

* Maintain communication and develop strong relationships with product team(s) and stakeholders. This includes setting team meeting schedules and agendas, completing period reports as required, presenting to stakeholders in formal project update meetings, etc. (Stakeholders and team members often cross functional and geographical boundaries.)

* Work with steering team to understand, define, clarify, and document project goals and scope, and to define acceptance criteria for various phases of the project

* Define competencies required to create project teams that can effectively and efficiently achieve project goals

* Draw expertise from team members and the technical/commercial/manufacturing network to solve problems, drive key learnings, and progress toward project goals

* Document project goals, objectives, team meeting minutes, formal decisions, and milestones on the Sharepoint IPP project site.

* Follow the State Gate process for project management.

* Pursue patents for new products and technologies developed

* Manage the performance of team members to meet the project requirements. Build consensus among team members on goals, tactics, and accountability

* Develop criteria for prioritizing work tasks. Focus on the most significant activities with the highest business potential and impact.

 

Travel Requirements 10-15% (US; some international possible)

 

Hours of work / work schedule / flex-time

 

* General business hours 8-5; exact work hours will vary and are dependent on the needs of the project

 

Education and Experience

 

* BS in Engineering discipline or equivalent

* 5+ years in a Product Development environment leading projects

* PMI certification preferred

 

Desired Skills

 

* Experience with Microsoft applications including Word, Project, Excel, PowerPoint.

* AutoCAD or other drafting software a plus.

* Experience with statistical software such as Minitab a plus.

* Ability to influence others who are not direct reports to achieve project objectives

* Experience with written and oral technical reports

* Understanding of risk analysis tools (FMEA) and rigorous decision making processes (KT)

* Experience communicating to leadership Physical requirements

* Must be able to participate in team experiments on the manufacturing line. Often requires extended periods of standing, walking, and light lifting and/or bending.

* Must be present in the laboratory for critical testing. Often requires extended periods of standing, walking, and light lifting and/or bending.

* Must be able to do computer work for extended periods of time. Planning for, facilitating, and documenting meeting minutes. Generating and gathering input on project documents.
