Purpose of Position:

 

The purpose of this position is to support the growth of Corning Precision Glass Solutions in Semiconductor Materials business through alignment of customer needs with internal capabilities while working closely with the regional business development/sales manager. This includes supporting the execution of new business development initiatives and product line plan with operations, development, engineering, sales, and marketing organizations. The Applications Engineer also supplies the voice of the customer to the technology and development teams for new product and capability developments.

 

Major Responsibilities:

 

• Provide technical engineering expertise, in a commercial role, of Glass materials designed into devices for the semiconductor industry

• Understand key technology trends, engage with key customers in the region and build relationship with the technical community

• Establish the interface required for existing and new growth opportunities within the above-mentioned market between Customers and Corning cross functional teams (materials manufacturing, finishing, coating, etc.); project and account managers; RD&E and international sales office representatives.

• Prepare and provide technical presentations and responses as required. Connect technical properties to customer applications to analyze customer trends, new opportunities and recommend course of actions to enhance Corning‘s position

• Identify new growth opportunities for existing and emerging applications and maximize profitability by understanding the value proposition, analyzing market segments, reviewing the competitive landscape, conducting product analysis, and supporting the development of tactical plans and strategies

• Work closely with regional business development/sales manager and support on all technical engagements with new and existing customers

 

Day to Day Responsibilities:

 

• Interface with peers in supply chain, operations, commercial technology, and sales. Provide information to these teams per internal systems

• Assist regional business development/sales manager with technical aspects of customer relationships

o Negotiate product specifications, promote standard products o Gain specification agreement with customers to design-in PGS products

o Organize internal response to product quality disagreements with customers and represent the outcome to the customer

o Publish detailed trip reports with clear actions and next steps after every customer meeting

• Provide the customer technical interface between PGS business and assigned customers

o Act as primary point of contact for customers’ technical information requests.

o Provide technical assistance to the customers’ manufacturing and sales operations.

o Prepare and maintain (and present as required internally and externally) technical and product related training presentations to assist customers.

o Identify new product and application opportunities at customers or otherwise in the field and report back internally for assessment and development.

o Proactively identify key decision makers/influencers with the customer organization (R&D, engineering, Fab user) and build solid relationship

 

Travel Requirements: 50%. International included. Travel to team members to drive work streams and customers for direct interface.

 

Education and Experience:

 

• Bachelor’s degree in technical field, Engineering degrees preferred.

• Advanced degree preferred. Degree in Glass technology, materials, semiconductor applications preferred

• Glass applications and/or device processing experience in the Semiconductor industry preferred

• Require either 2-3 years in account management, applications engineering, or engineering role closely supporting customers or new product development

• 2+ years of direct semiconductor industry experience

• Direct experience in taking early stage product through qualification and design-in process

 

Required Skills:

 

• Skills to communicate clearly in front of a large (perhaps unsympathetic) group, including explaining PGS technology and applications

• Poise and confidence in an external situation. Ability to think extemporaneously in a stressful situation

• Ability to apply technical knowledge to solve customer problems. Ability to “think ahead”, using judgment to anticipate outcomes for different technical scenarios.

• Ability to effectively organize, participate in and lead cross-functional and diverse teams. Ability to gain trust and cooperation from a diverse set of internal colleagues and external customers
