Scope of Position:

  • Support early stage manufacturing (both process and equipment) for diamond machined optical components involving high precision electro-optical assemblies and components.
  • Setup machines and manufacture high precision optical components.
  • Provide recommendations to those creating routers, defining the manufacturing process for precision housings, lenses, mirrors and/or assemblies.
  • Interpret customer quality requirements and collect necessary data during the manufacturing process
  • Support or lead continuous improvement activities, new product or process introductions, and cost reduction projects using lean six sigma practices
  • Work with team members to tackle technical engineering related problems

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Provide problem solving support for process and equipment to production operations for precision optical components. Solve material, identify root causes, and implement corrective action.
  • Train and mentor operations personnel on equipment and processes
  • Use meticulous processes and technical knowledge to build detailed understanding for key process steps and document through the creation of SOPs, job aids, and documentation.
  • Assure safety of operators and equipment and follow safety and environmental regulations
  • Function as a team member and/or team leader on focused projects
  • Implement and document material, process, and equipment changes
  • Use statistical tools in process problem solving and process improvement
  • Assure quality and repeatability of processes and products
  • Support new product introductions through equipment upgrades, process validation, documentation, and training.
  • Support the estimating process.

Hours of work:

  • 40 hrs. M-F, business hours; flexible hours may be required to support off-hours experimentation/operations on weekends and evenings

Required Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering (Materials, Mechanical, Optical, Industrial or Equivalent)
  • 7+ years of hands-on manufacturing experience with diamond machined and/or polished optics
  • Strong technical fundamentals with process engineering skills
  • Able to handle multiple complex tasks and set priorities. Able to collaborate across organizational boundaries and integrate solutions
  • Leadership to encourage teamwork and accomplish goals
  • Able to communicate and present results to both internal and external customers
  • Creative, innovative problem solving, strong data analysis, and interpretation skills
  • Basic knowledge of Six Sigma (DMAIC) methodology

Desired Skills:

  • Knowledge of reflective and refractive optics and their manufacture
  • Multi-axis, precision machine tool knowledge and programming skills
  • Six Sigma Green Belt trained, preferred
  • Process development
  • SolidWorks, Code V or Zemax basic knowledge

Soft Skills:

  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Personal initiative, commitment, desire to learn, organized with planning and time management skills
  • Ability to build relationships within groups; team building skills
  • Positive attitude, flexible and good work ethic
