The Specialty Materials segment manufactures products that provide more than 150 material formulations for glass, glass ceramics and fluoride crystals to meet demand for unique customer needs. Consequently, this segment operates in a wide variety of commercial and industrial markets that include display optics and components, semiconductor optics components, aerospace and defense, astronomy, ophthalmic products, telecommunications components and cover glass that is optimized for portable display devices.

 

Scope of Position:

  • In this role, you will support early stage manufacturing (both process and equipment) to meet customer make-to-print orders involving high precision electro-optical assemblies and components.
  • We work on the creation of routers defining the manufacturing process for precision housings, lenses, mirrors and/or assemblies.
  • Interpreting customer quality requirements and collecting necessary data during the manufacturing process through instruction within the router, the creation of data sheets and FAI documents
  • Support or lead continuous improvement activities, new product or process introductions, and cost reduction projects using lean six sigma practices
  • Working with other team members to tackle difficult technical engineering related problems

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • We provide problem solving support for process and equipment to production operations
  • Training and mentoring operations personnel on equipment and processes
  • We use rigorous processes and technical knowledge to build detailed technical understanding for key process steps and document through the creation of SOPs, job aids, and assembly instructions.
  • Assure safety of operators and equipment and follow safety and environmental regulations
  • Function as a team member and/or team leader on focused projects
  • Trouble shoot material, process and equipment issues, identify root causes, and implement corrective actions
  • Implement and document material, process and/or equipment changes
  • We use statistical tools in process problem solving and process improvement
  • Assure quality and repeatability of processes and products
  • Support new product introductions through equipment upgrades, process validation, documentation and training

Education & Experience:

  • We require a BS - Bachelor of Science in Engineering (Materials, Mechanical, Industrial or Equivalent)
  • We are seeking 7+ years of manufacturing experience
  • Strong technical fundamentals with process engineering skills
  • Able to handle multiple complex tasks and set priorities
  • Able to collaborate across organizational boundaries and integrate solutions
  • Leadership to encourage teamwork and accomplish common goals
  • Able to communicate and present results to both internal and external customers
  • Creative/innovative problem solving
  • Strong data analysis and interpretation skills
  • Basic knowledge of Six Sigma (DMAIC) methodology

Desired Skills:

  • Knowledge of reflective and refractive optics
  • Multi-axis machine tool knowledge and programming skills
  • Knowledge of Diamond Turning and Polishing
  • We would prefer Six Sigma Green Belt trained
  • Process development
  • SolidWorks Experience

Soft Skills:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • We prefer a personal initiative, commitment, and desire to learn
  • Organized with good planning and time management skills
  • Ability to build relationships within multi-functional groups; team building skills
  • Positive attitude, flexible and good work ethic

Travel Requirements:

  • We anticipate minimal travel for this position

Hours of work:

  • 40 hrs. M-F, business hours; Flexible hours may be required to support off-hours experimentation/operations on weekends and evenings
