The Specialty Materials segment manufactures products that provide more than 150 material formulations for glass, glass ceramics and fluoride crystals to meet demand for unique customer needs. Consequently, this segment operates in a wide variety of commercial and industrial markets that include display optics and components, semiconductor optics components, aerospace and defense, astronomy, ophthalmic products, telecommunications components and cover glass that is optimized for portable display devices.

Role Purpose

In this role as a summer engineering intern you will support the design, analysis, and manufacturing of world-class, EO/IR and hyperspectral imaging systems. This is a dynamic position for an individual to work as part of the Corning Advanced Optics engineering team to develop custom precision hyperspectral imaging systems.

Key Responsibilities

Primary duties will involve working within the EO/IR imaging team to design, engineer & build imaging systems including development of tooling, testing approach, and instrumentation.

Experiences/Education - Required

  • Pursuing a degree in Optics, Electronics, or related discipline with concentration in Optics or Imaging Science.
  • Basic understanding of optical systems and imaging techniques
  • High level of technical curiosity and ability to learn, develop, and advance technical skills in precision engineering and imaging product development.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Must be available for 10 weeks during Summer 2027 (May-August 2027) with a graduation date of December 2027 or later
  • Be interested in working for Corning, Inc after graduation, if presented with a full-time job opportunity.
  • Be willing to work at the posted job location

Desired Skills

  • Ability to use experimentation to develop basic process knowledge, design prototype test systems, and perform proof of principle testing to validate imaging approach.
  • Experience with focal plane arrays, image processing, and other optical instruments
  • Exposure to infrared imaging, image processing, detector characterization, or precision optical alignment
  • Ability to function within a product development team of multi-disciplinary engineers.
  • Working knowledge of analysis tools such as MatLab, Python, or Excel.

​The range for this position is $1,635.00 - $3,185.00 biweekly.  Starting pay for the successful applicant is prescribed based on geographic location, nature of position, and year in school.
