The Specialty Materials segment manufactures products that provide more than 150 material formulations for glass, glass ceramics and fluoride crystals to meet demand for unique customer needs. Consequently, this segment operates in a wide variety of commercial and industrial sectors that include display optics and components, semiconductor optics components, aerospace and defense, astronomy, ophthalmic products, telecommunications components and cover glass that is optimized for portable display devices.
 

Scope of Position:

An Optical Fabrication Technician is required to support the development of complex optical systems. In this role, you will manufacture unique optical components out of metals, plastics and crystals using diamond turning equipment, deterministic polishing equipment and CNC and conventional polishing tools for aerospace and defense (A&D) sensor systems. These components will be measured and qualified using various metrology tools such as calipers, micrometers, interferometers, and special optical test setups. You will work within the optical finishing team to develop new processes, procedures, and setups as well as verifying metrology requirements for individual optical components. We will train the right individual.

 

Required education:

  • High school diploma/GED required.
  • BS degree in engineering field preferred
     

Required skills:

  • Minimum 2 years’ experience with optical fabrication and/or testing
  • Knowledge of CNC machining and/or G&M code
  • Knowledge of precision hand tools such as calipers and micrometers, interferometers, profilometers and related optical metrology equipment
  • Ability to troubleshoot machine setups and component issues
  • Ability to use MS Office applications such as Word, Excel and Outlook to document processes
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Excellent written and verbal skills
  • Competent shop math and geometry skills
     

Desired skills:

  • Experience with optical fabrication processes and optical testing
  • Experience with Nanotech or Precitech CNC diamond turning machines
  • Experience in programming optical components with Diffsys or Nanocam
  • Experience with CNC machining including G&M code
  • Ability to read detailed part drawings
  • Working knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerances (GD&T)
