The Specialty Materials segment manufactures products that provide more than 150 material formulations for glass, glass ceramics and fluoride crystals to meet demand for unique customer needs. Consequently, this segment operates in a wide variety of commercial and industrial markets that include display optics and components, semiconductor optics components, aerospace and defense, astronomy, ophthalmic products, telecommunications components and cover glass that is optimized for portable display devices.


Scope of Position:

In this role, you will handle tooling/fixturing design projects for new and existing products, supporting Keene manufacturing for Advanced Optics


Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Work to resolve technical issues and implement tool/fixture design improvements to assist in the fabrication of current production parts.
  • Will create new tool/fixture designs to enable fabrication of new “make to print” parts.
  • Work with Manufacturing Engineering and Design Engineering on fixtures for optical testing of components and complex assemblies.
  • Collaborate with CNC Mill, Lathe, Diamond Turning, and Coating SME's on fixture designs prior to final detailing.
  • Create all models, drawings and manufacturing routers to fabricate the tools in-house in our multi-million dollar machine shop.
  • Work with our CNC programmers and operators to figure out the best machining process to produce the tooling components.
  • Work with outside vendors on any purchase items needed for complicated fixture assemblies.
  • Work with a supervisor to handle project priorities
  • Understand Corning’s intellectual property management process and follows that process in documenting any intellectual property developed as part of a project.

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time:

  • Typically work M-F, first shift, but we need flexibility to support extra hours as needed.

Education & Experience:

  • We require a minimum of an Associate’s degree in a technical field
  • We are seeking 5+ experience in tool and fixture design in a manufacturing environment
  • Ability to read and understand product drawing requirements
  • CAD experience, preferably Solidworks
  • Understand and apply GD&T


Desired Experience:

  • Experience in the Optics Industry
  • Working with tight tolerances (< 0.0001”)
  • Use of Microsoft Excel and Word
  • Fabricating components (lathe, mill, grinding)
