Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry. This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Purpose of the Position:

Develops and maintains reliable and detailed business case analysis using ABP (Assumption Based Planning) and ECM (Engineering Cost Models) to facilitate competitive analysis to enable key strategic decisions for the business.

 

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Performs cost and capacity studies, economic comparisons and justification analysis; evaluates systems, methods, human factors, work flow, and other opportunities for productivity improvement.
  • Develop future state cost models based on product and process improvements or implementation of new technologies that transform manufacturing operations.
  • Validate cost reduction models and assumptions as projects progress through the development and release to manufacturing stages.
  • Present recommendations to OCS leadership on key activities required to deliver cost reduction.
  • Support project prioritization process through explanation of business case impacts to priority decision makers.
  • Support competitive intelligence activities through application of product and process engineering as well as cost understanding to ensure accurate comparison analysis.
  • Identify key assumptions to drive cost analysis modeling, such as expecting an X% reduction in labor based on a new process.
  • Develop clear and concise presentations to allow OCS leadership to quickly understand the data and make good data-driven decisions.

 

Required Skills:

  • Understanding of: Lean Manufacturing concepts and principles, cycle time reduction, cost analysis, cost modeling, manufacturing/business processes, Value Stream Mapping, line balance/staffing, and work cell design.
  • Ability to lead groups through brainstorming events.
  • Sound problem solving and decision-making processes and skills.
  • Proficient in quality tools including Performance Excellence, Project Management tools, etc.
  • Proficient in process mapping skills and methodologies.

  • Understanding of optical connectivity products & manufacturing processes.
  • Familiarity with SAP (standard costs, bills of materials, labor routings).

  • Ability to work autonomously.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft PowerPoint and Word.
  • Expert level knowledge & application of Excel.
  • Fluent in English (both verbal and written).

 

Desired Skills:

  • Ability to effectively utilize problem-solving and decision-making tools.

  • Understanding of (Lean) organizational design.
  • Understanding of design for manufacturability/assembly concepts, product life cycle management concepts, performance/line measures, and procurement systems.
  • Working knowledge of supplementary analysis tools such as Crystal Ball, Tableau, PowerBI etc.
  • Experience in DFx (Design for manufacturing, test, sourcing, etc.).

Required Education:

  • 4-year degree in a technical discipline with preference for B.S. in Engineering

 

Required Years and Area of Experience:

  • 5+ years of work experience with OCS manufacturing products and processes.
  • Experience with analysis of cost reduction opportunities.
  • Experience across more than one business function is helpful (i.e. production & engineering or engineering & finance).

 

Travel Requirements:

  • Depending on the employee’s location, travel will be required occasionally to Mexico, Hickory, Keller and Europe (primarily Strykow).
  • Expect to travel 25-30% of the time.

 

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time:

  • Standard work hours are M-F 8:00-5:00, however, overtime or shifted work hours is not unusual and is indeed expected at times.
