Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

 

Role Purpose

 

The Senior Process Development Engineer will lead technical initiatives to advance connectivity innovation across Corning’s divisions or research and development. The role involves driving process improvements and resolving complex problems through the application of the scientific method, DOE, DMAIC, and advanced statistical tools, with a focus on reducing defects, enhancing product quality, and optimizing manufacturing performance. Responsibilities include evaluating raw materials, defining process parameters, developing new equipment, and documenting experiments and process changes to deliver cost, safety, and efficiency improvements.

 

Key Responsibilities

 

  • Design and develop new processes or improve existing processes at Corning facilities worldwide.
  • Coordinate outsourced engineering solutions for targeted process innovations.
  • Create operational ranges for parameters defined as a result of experimental development.
  • Develop and execute project plan.
  • Establish process development technical guideline.
  • Work with local plant process experts and global SMEs on new processes innovation.
  • Solve problems and improve processes based on fundamental understanding.
  • Ensure that manufacturing requirements are properly developed and documented in conjunction with appropriate manufacturing, production, and engineering personnel.
  • Ensure that these requirements are met to the greatest extent possible using the best available technology.
  • Provide information and technical assistance to manufacturing, engineering, and production personnel as required.
  • Develop documentation for each project and work with associated plant personnel to implement it.
  • Structured problem-solving methods such as KT, Designed Experimentation, and Six Sigma.
  • Implement Process Control and Process Discipline systems into manufacturing operations.
  • Analyze process data using statistical tools (e.g. pareto, regression, time charting, analysis of variance, gauge R&R, etc.).
  • Review and interpret data to make recommendations on immediate actions, long term corrective actions, follow-up experiments, etc.
  • Troubleshoot equipment and processes.
  • Document all new ideas for possible patent submission.

Experiences/Education - Required

 

  • BS in Engineering
  • Minimum 5 years of experience of process engineering in a development or operations
  • Excellent project management skills, including managing multiple projects simultaneously
  • Problem solving - Proficient in the use of DOE, SPC, Six Sigma and/or other process control/ analysis techniques – to recommend decision based on thorough data analysis.
  • Proficient in the use of MS Office (Excel, Word, Project, PowerPoint)

 

Experiences/Education - Desired

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering or
  • Design products or manufacturing processes using CAD (Pro Engineer a PLUS)
  • Capable of performing complex data analysis using MS excel (SPC), or Minitab software
  • Familiar with fiber optic theory
  • Fluent in foreign languages: Spanish, Chinese, and Polish
  • Experience communicating effectively to internal and external customers and within multi-national groups

The range for this position is $101,784.00 - $139,953.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.
