Description of Work:

  • Solid understanding in equipment and automation processes and drives fundamental understanding across Corning’s Life Sciences Division
  • Equipment and automation process support for Division-wide or multi-plant manufacturing projects
  • Maintain knowledge of the newest technology developments within the manufacturing equipment and automation industry, while supporting the consistent application of new technology and best practices!
  • Drives the development and implementation of the Division Equipment and Automation Strategy
  • Champions continuous improvement activities, including new technology implementation and fundamental process understanding, in support of cost reduction and quality improvement projects
  • Ensures Corning's Intellectual Property management process is followed and any intellectual property developed as part of a project is accurately detailed


Scope of Position:

  • Provide technical and business direction in the specification, development, installation and testing of equipment and automation systems
  • Build project plans (scope, schedule, cost estimates, project acceptance criteria, etc.) Establish receivership requirements for projects
  • Lead capital spending projects as assigned. Manage schedule and resource challenges
  • Understand customer equipment and capacity needs. Ensure their expectations are being met
  • Coach and mentor engineering personnel as appropriate to build skill sets to improve the project team’s efficiency
  • Develop short and long term equipment strategies to achieve process production, quality, safety and financial goals
  • Collaborate with and support Research & Development, Division Engineering and Manufacturing teams on new product introductions, process improvements, raw material changes, and equipment design modifications
  • Ensure all engineering related activities are conducted in accordance with established design and process control procedures
  • Be an advocate and role model for safety within their area of responsibility. Ensure all work is performed in a safe manner and environment. Responsible for his/her safety, as well as that of others that may be at the facility, whether working or visiting. Responsible for observing safe work practices and being proactive for reporting any unsafe conditions
  • Utilize Lean manufacturing principles to reduce manufacturing costs
  • Detailing SOP, SOS, experiment planning, and process changes
  • Support manufacturing on multiple shift schedules in a fast-paced production environment!
  • Actively participate in project meetings and detail key issues, action items and decisions
  • Effectively participate in all phases of project methodologies to include appropriate initiation, planning, implementation and control, and close-out elements
  • Share expertise and knowledge to foster continuous improvement


Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Interface and work with the Research, Development and Manufacturing teams that are involved in the innovation and manufacture of new products, equipment and automation systems for Corning’s Life Sciences Division
  • Work with other project team members on solving difficult equipment, automation and engineering related problems, understanding project related issues, and general process engineering and process understanding
  • Collaborate with outside suppliers on specifying and procuring various equipment, automation systems and machine components to support projects
  • Individual must investigate prior art and detail any Intellectual Property developed as part of their project activities
  • Individual must detail project results through internal reporting means
  • Individual must present the project(s) they are involved with for review by peers, customers and managers
  • Work as a team member/advisor during the development of new equipment and automation systems with system integrators and/or external sub-contractors
  • Report on project activities on a pre-determined basis. Ensure results meet the customer’s requirements and standards
  • Maintain records and track expenditures against allocated funds. Estimate time required to accomplish tasks and supervise performance against schedules.
  • Individual must be capable of executing project assignments with minimal direction.
  • Individual will be expected to work in a High Performance Work Team environment.
  • Some project travel is expected and will depend upon the project portfolio


Travel Requirements (please note if international):

  • Up to 40%, including International Travel


Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time:

  • M-F 40+ hrs.


Education and Experience (minimum required for consideration):

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering
  • Minimum of 8 years in engineering, instrument/process/product development, systems integration, or process equipment design and implementation


Required Skills:

  • Knowledge of manufacturing methods, systems, production processes, and controls systems
  • Demonstrated delivery of results through project and interpersonal leadership
  • Track record of performance results and people development
  • Proven record of engineering/technical accomplishment
  • Project Management skills
  • CAD experience, preferably SolidWorks
  • Ability to acquire and retain new information


Desired Skills:

  • Knowledge of Corning’s businesses

  • Prior experience in a plant or division engineering group
  • Strong internal Corning network
