Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Job Title:   (LATAM)  Applications Engineer

Scope of Position:

To provide technical and subject matter expert support to carriers and enterprise networks customers with emphasis on FTTx, optical networks and datacenters.

Major Role and Responsibilities:

  • Become a subject matter expert on the products and installation methods assigned for both OSP – outside plant products and ISP – inside plant products. Function as a product and installation technical expert to customers and commercial groups.
  • Provide product training to customers and their contractors on Corning products and proper installation and testing methods.
  • Training could take place anywhere in LATAM region and could be conducted in a variety of locations such as a conference room, a contractor’s yard, or in the field
  • Training may also be conducted remotely via video (ex: webinar)
  • Create training artifacts such as written installation procedures and training videos.
  • Liaison with Sales, PLM, and product development to resolve field issues for existing products. May include visiting the installation site to perform an investigation and to document all findings. Follow the issue through with PLM and factory until a satisfactory resolution is determined.
  • Work jointly with Technology and PLM to evaluate products and installation methods, develop new installation methods and attempt to replicate product field failures.
  • Support customer first office applications (FOA’s) and field trials as needed to ensure the successful deployment.
  • Learn customer network architecture and design philosophy to be able to develop BOMs and recommend products and solution sets for their application.
  • Support product development projects by providing input concerning field practices for installation, customer preferences, and use of both Corning’s and competitor’s fiber optic products.
  • Offer other expert assistance to project teams consistent with own experience (liaison with manufacturing facilities, statistical analysis, and product commercialization are common examples).

 

Required Education

  • Minimum of 3-years degree in an engineering field or Bachelor of Science degree
  • 100% proficiency in English and Spanish, written and verbal.

 

Required Experience

  • At least 5 years or more of experience in the Telecommunications industry.

 

 

Required Technical Skills:

  • Knowledge of Passive Optical Network products (FTTx, LAN, Data Center) and how they are interconnected to create network design solutions
  • Knowledge of optical fiber theory
  • Product development or manufacturing experience
  • Field experience with fiber optic products (FTTx, LAN, Data Center) and processes such as cable handling, fiber splicing, connectorization, and testing
  • Experience with computer aided drafting (CAD)

Desired Skills:

 

  • Experience in fiber optic cable and component installation practices
  • Proficiency in statistical analysis and problem solving

 

 

 

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time:

 

  • 40 hours per week, minimum, based on local geographic guidelines. Flexibility required given the globally dispersed nature of the team. 
  • Expected travel time 50%. International travel is expected to be a part of this job.
  • Weekend travel is occasionally required.
