Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.
Role Purpose
Serve as an electrical controls resource for process improvement, cost reduction and new process receivership. Manage electrical and controls scope of assigned projects. Lead/participate in project teams and support daily manufacturing operations by providing technical support to plant’s various control systems. These controls solutions may be for systems to deliver and transform raw materials to product, convey ware between discrete processing steps, and/or measure and characterize ware created and/or processed by these novel manufacturing methods.
Day to Day Responsibilities:
- Integrates field devices for flow control, material handling and metering, motion control, temperature control, and associated safety systems into an overall controls package enabling a fully-functional equipment platform.
- Work closely with IT & process engineers to define analog & digital channel requirements, control sequence logic (both time-based and event-based), fail-safe states and process /equipment recovery sequences.
- Select and specify field devices to accomplish desired process / equipment functions, and compatible / compliant with site standards.
- Drive to clarify design requirements when they are ambiguous or unknown.
- Accurately estimates timeframe to complete project work, once scope of work is adequately defined, then completes work to agreed-to timeline.
- Designs control solutions vice replicating and/or scaling existing equipment designs.
- Provide electrical and controls engineering and equipment technical expertise in fiber optic cable manufacturing in support of production, maintenance, continuous improvement, cost reduction, and productivity improvement.
- Internal subject matter expert in control systems (PLC, HMI, Drives etc.,), system integration, sensors and electro-mechanical devices
- Provide technical support when maintenance requirements exceed electrical associate capabilities. Develop fundamental understanding of critical process and technical requirements, identify areas of technical risk in assigned projects, conduct prototype / feasibility testing to verify concept, and define and document system design specifications
- Develop control architectures, control functional specification, and system integration requirements that will satisfy process and manufacturing requirements
- Actively participate / direct all phases of technology transfer of process / measurement equipment including design, fabrication, off-line integration and testing, installation, production start-up support, training of plant personnel.
- Recommend and implement long term solutions to recurring equipment performance issues. Provide inputs to capital and facilities plans for equipment upgrade or maintenance cycles.
- Support process projects and data system projects by interfacing with operators and production team leaders to monitor and correct process fluctuations and equipment issues
- Conduct equipment qualifications and initial training of new personnel
- Support plant initiatives, and Operations on OEE, SPC, SQC and ISO
- Provide timely and efficient engineering support to meet or exceed the requirements of internal and external customers.
- Individual must be capable of executing project assignments, in a team based environment, with minimal supervision

Travel Requirements: Negligible
Hours of Work/Work Schedule/Flex-Time:
Typically 8AM-5PM M-F, but some off hours support may be required to support 24/7 manufacturing operation
Required Education:
Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering
Required Years and Area of Experience:
- At least 5 years of relevant work experience
- Experience in PLC programming (AB Studio 5000 preferred)
- Able to design, configure, and implement HMI programming (GE iFix preferred)
- Ability to program in ladder logic, structured text and function block.
- Strong fundamental understanding of electrical design practices, control systems integration, controls architectures, PLC’s, electro-mechanical drive systems, vision system, risk assessment and safety systems
- Ability to drive technical solutions with minimal direction
- Experienced in the checkout and verification of electrical control panels
- Well versed in the rules and regulation relating to implementation and best practices in electrical system design and implementation including arc flash requirements
- Working knowledge of NFPA79 Industrial Machinery Electrical Safety Standard
- Working knowledge of safety system design and deployment including safety hazard assessment, safety rated device selection, and interlocking safety zones.
- Project management skills
Desired Skills:
- Knowledge of cable manufacturing process and equipment
- Manufacturing experience and ability to work in a manufacturing environment
- Knowledge of MES systems, VB.NET and PI Data Historian
- AutoCAD Electrical

The range for this position is $105,070.00 - $144,471.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education. The benefits available for this position are dependent on hours worked and may include medical, dental, vision, 401(k) plan, pension plan, life insurance coverage, disability benefits, and PTO.
