Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.
Role Purpose
Serve as an electrical controls resource for process improvement, cost reduction and capital expansion projects. Manage electrical and controls scope of assigned projects. Participate in project teams and support daily manufacturing operations by providing technical support to plant’s various control systems.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop fundamental understanding of critical process and technical requirements, identify areas of technical risk in assigned projects, conduct prototype / feasibility testing to verify concept, and define and document system design specifications.
- Recommend and implement long term solutions to recurring equipment performance issues. Provide inputs to capital and facilities plans for equipment upgrade or maintenance cycles.
- Work closely with IT & process engineers to define analog & digital channel requirements, control sequence logic (both time-based and event-based), fail-safe states and process / equipment recovery sequences.
- Design control solutions via replicating and/or scaling existing equipment designs.
- Select and specify field devices to accomplish desired process / equipment functions, and compatible / compliant with site standards. Integrate field devices for flow control, material handling and metering, motion control, temperature control, and associated safety systems into an overall controls package enabling a fully functional equipment platform.
- Provide electrical and controls engineering and equipment technical expertise in fiber optic cable manufacturing in support of production, maintenance, continuous improvement, cost reduction, and productivity improvement. Provide technical support when maintenance requirements exceed electrical associate capabilities. Support process projects and data system projects by interfacing with operators and production team leaders to monitor and correct process fluctuations and equipment issues.

Experiences/Education - Required
Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (other degrees will be considered with relevant work experience)
- Experience in PLC programming (AB Studio 5000 preferred) – ability to generate, debug, and modify PLC code.
- Able to design, configure, and implement HMI / SCADA programming (GE iFix preferred)
- Ability to program in ladder logic, structured text and function block.
- Experience with generating and interpreting electrical drawings (AutoCAD Electrical), reviewing for conformance to Corning standards.
- Strong fundamental understanding of electrical design practices, control systems integration, controls architectures, PLC’s, electro-mechanical drive systems, vision system, risk assessment and safety systems.
- Experienced in the checkout and verification of electrical control panels.
- Well versed in the rules and regulation relating to implementation and best practices in electrical system design and implementation, including arc flash requirements.
- Working knowledge of pertinent safety codes, i.e. NFPA79 Industrial Machinery Electrical Safety Standard.
- Working knowledge of safety system design and deployment including safety hazard assessment, safety rated device selection, LOTO, and interlocking safety zones.
Experiences/Education - Desired
- Significant coding experience with demonstrated ability to learn quickly
- Project management skills
- Knowledge of cable manufacturing process and equipment
- Manufacturing experience and ability to work in a manufacturing environment
- Knowledge of MES systems, VB.NET and PI Data Historian
- Experience with the OSI PI (historian) interface
- Beckhoff PLC experience
- Knowledge of industrial electrical distribution and applicable NEC with a focus on safety

The range for this position is $88,059.00 - $121,082.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education. The benefits available for this position are dependent on hours worked and may include medical, dental, vision, 401(k) plan, pension plan, life insurance coverage, disability benefits, and PTO.
