Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Scope of Position:

This is a permanent plant engineering position with key plant responsibilities:

  • Manage the controls engineering scope of product quality measurement systems, capital expansion and process improvement.
  • Implement robust, cost-effective measurement systems and process machine control systems.
  • Interface with external system integrators to successfully deliver fully integrated quality measurement systems to Corning’s facilities.
  • Participate in all phases of the project including design, fabrication, off-line integration and testing, installation, production start-up support, training of plant personnel, and technology transfer.


Work Hours and Schedule:

  • Nominal working hours are M – F, 8 AM – 5 PM.
  • Informal 24/7 coverage for ad-hoc call-in support (3rd Level Subject Matter Expert).


Travel: less than 5%


Educations and Experience:

  • BSEE / BSCS / BSME / BSCE with 2+ years experience working with PLCs / HMIs / Inspection Systems measuring/controlling process output and product quality; other engineering will be considered with relevant work experience.


Required Skills:

  • Must have experience in programming of PLCs and the ability to generate, debug and modify PLC code – ladder logic, structured text and function block diagram.
  • Must be able to interpret electrical drawings including control panel layouts, component documentation, and schematics.
  • Must have the ability to reach fundamental understanding of process issues utilizing sound troubleshooting skills.
  • Must have experience in programming of HMI / SCADA systems programming in a plant environment including higher level communications protocols.
  • Must have knowledge of product quality definition and measurements.
  • Must have experience completing gage R&Rs and measurement systems analysis.
  • Must have general knowledge of statistics and statistical process control.
  • Must have experience with a statistical analysis software package.
  • Must have experience working with vision systems for measuring product attributes and product quality.
  • Ensure proactive safety measures for all equipment and processes. Seeks to identify and correct potential safety or environmental issues using NEC, NFPA, and other pertinent safety codes. Ensure safety procedures, such as Lock-Out Tag-Out, are followed at all times.
  • Work closely with support technicians to resolve equipment issues.
  • Capable of executing project assignments, in a team-based environment, with minimal supervision.
  • Thoroughly carry out assignments to completion.
  • Visionary (understands the big picture and is able to project this view).


Desired Skills:

  • Strong fundamental understanding of electrical design practices, machine/motion control systems, electro-mechanical systems, VFD and Servo programming, communication protocols, and practical application.
  • Data Visualization Tools (PowerBI).
  • Experience with Manufacturing Execution Systems.
  • Familiarity with databases (SQL).
  • Experience working in semi-continuous/length-based manufacturing.
  • Knowledge of legacy controls equipment, networks, and software.
  • Experience with Cognex or Keyence vision systems.
  • Experience with data historians (OSI PI) interface.
  • Rockwell/Allen Bradley/Beckhoff PLC experience.
  • Experience with GE Ifix.
  • Strong written/verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
