Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

 

Scope of Position:

Apply knowledge of engineering principles and practices to effectively accomplish technical assignments and projects. Makes decisions independently based upon sound engineering and scientific methods. Actively participates within and beyond department boundaries to resolve important process and product issues. Enhances manufacturing capabilities through the implementation of new ideas and methods. Independently executes projects to fulfill department goals and objectives in the areas of cost reduction, productivity gains, process flow, capacity increases, scrap reduction and process and product enhancements.

 

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Apply engineering fundamentals and principles to effectively accomplish technical assignments
  • Independently execute assignments to achieve department goals in safety, productivity, cost, and quality.
  • Assist in the implementation of process improvements to reduce scrap and improve changeover times through the application of LEAN manufacturing principles.
  • Support operations with day to day equipment and process issues troubleshooting.
  • Assist senior engineers by gathering and analyzing data and developing solutions for recurring yield losses.
  • Apply root cause analysis techniques to identify appropriate corrective actions to issues impacting overall manufacturing effectiveness.
  • Perform value stream mapping to Identify bottlenecks in various production processes.
  • Present findings and lessons learned to management at the end of the internship

 

Required Education and Experience:

  • At least two years of school completed towards four-year Engineering Degree.
  • Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science Engineering or Industrial Engineering concentration preferred.
  • At least one semester of core engineering course work completed

Hours of work: M-F, 8am-5pm, support off shift as needed
