Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Scope of Position:

Provide 2nd level technical expertise to support 24/7 manufacturing operations. Utilize engineering principles and practices to effectively accomplish technical assignments and projects.  Makes decisions based upon sound engineering and scientific methods.  Actively participates within and beyond department boundaries to resolve important process and product issues.  Enhance manufacturing capabilities through the implementation of new ideas and methods.  Independently executes projects to fulfill department goals and objectives. 

 

Day to Day Tasks:

  • Provide Level 2 support for process and equipment, assisting maintenance and operations as necessary
  • For designated area, manage process performance improvement (OEE), recipe management, and small-scale projects (Safety, Yield, Cost, Capacity)
  • Lead the morning production meeting and manage ongoing action items
  • Work with engineering to develop equipment specifications/requirements and organize meetings with respective support groups to review proposals and quotes prior to purchasing
  • Interface with operators, team leaders and peers to develop and implement process, controls, equipment, or safety improvements into manufacturing
  • Develop maintenance and operator training and troubleshooting documentation
  • Troubleshoot and address equipment and process issues – including completing basic installations of components
  • Assist in the commissioning and qualification of equipment
  • Support master trainers with the training of production personnel on new equipment
  • Document process procedures required to enable production to run equipment and products efficiently and within specifications
  • Document calibration and configuration procedures required to allow production equipment to run efficiently within product specifications.
  • Train maintenance and other support personnel to improve Level 1 troubleshooting skills plant wide
  • Support the transfer of new cabling technology, materials, or processes from development to production. Provide processing support during product development, develop plans as to how the equipment/processes will be employed into production and ensure that the new technology is repeatable in a production environment prior to transfer
  • Ensure all production and maintenance documentation is completed such as MI's, SOP's, PM's, calibration, and troubleshooting guides

 

Work Hours and Schedule:

  • Nominal working hours are M – F, 7 AM – 3 PM.
  • Informal 24/7 coverage for ad-hoc call-in support is required. (2nd Level Subject Matter Expert)

 

Travel: 

  • Less than 2%

 

Education and Experience: 

  • High School or equivalent
  • 2+ years manufacturing environment experience (fiber optic / cabling preferred)
  • Creative/innovative problem solving
  • Strong technical/mechanical understanding
  • Able to collaborate across organizational boundaries and integrate solutions
  • Results oriented and high commitment to 24/7 operations
  • The ability to learn new technology and processes quickly
  • Excel & PowerPoint knowledge

 

Desired Skills: 

  • Technical degree preferred
  • Strong written/verbal communication and interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of plastic extrusion/UV processing technologies
  • Direct cabling process and equipment knowledge
  • Design software knowledge (AutoCAD, Inventor)
  • Data analysis skills (Excel pivot tables, Power BI)
  • Ability to use basic measuring tools (calipers, micrometers, and rulers)

The range for this position is $58,207.00 - $80,035.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education. The benefits available for this position are dependent on hours worked and may include medical, dental, vision, 401(k) plan, pension plan, life insurance coverage, disability benefits, and PTO.
