Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.


Scope of Work: The Safety Engineer will work with the Safety Manager and is responsible for evaluating, designing, implementing, and maintaining workplace environmental, safety, and health programs that are consistent with applicable requirements (regulations, ISO 14001, corporate Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) standards, internal management system standards, and industry best management practices).


Job Description:

  • Analyzes, develops, and implements action plans, processes, and procedures to control EH&S risks and for achieving compliance to regulatory standards, Corning safety and environmental policies, ISO 14001, and improvement initiatives.
  • Sets up processes to conduct suitable and sufficient assessments that actively identify hazards and reduce risk including hazard identification & risk assessments, pre-startup safety review, job safety analysis, PPE, machine guarding, and hazardous energy.
  • Analyze work tasks and environments using industry and Corning accepted ergonomic assessment methods/tools and drive improvements that reduce risk of musculoskeletal disorders.
  • Evaluates, develops, and conducts training in all aspects of EH&S to ensure compliance with legal and Corning requirements and in a manner that positively engages employee behaviors.
  • Works collaboratively to investigate incidents & implement actions that reduce the risk of re-occurrence.
  • Coaches all levels of personnel on critical skills, behaviors and techniques that that builds and sustains a safety culture consistent with Corning’s values.
  • Conducts or leads third party industrial hygiene evaluations sufficient to identify hazards, risks, and trends.
  • Performs trending analysis to improve EH&S performance by gathering data, developing reports, identifying gaps, evaluating risk and implementing improvements.
  • Organizes, evaluates, and participates in internal audits and inspections.
  • Ensure the Emergency Response Plan remains current with regulatory requirements and site needs. Responds to emergency events within the plant to mitigate/control the effects and begin to restore the situation to normal operations.
  • Ensure programs for contractors and construction projects are implemented consistent with Corning standards, regulatory requirements, and best management practices.
  • Supports the Safety Manager with the development of annual plans including goals, objectives, targets, training, audits, etc.
  • Keep abreast of federal, state and local environmental, safety, and health regulations; reviews technical literature.
  • Maintains EH&S metrics & key performance indicators
  • Plans own tasks to accomplish the assigned objectives with minimal supervision. Gathers information independently using established and well-defined methods.
  • Requires supporting occasional activities that occur outside the normal weekday work hours including nights and weekends.
  • Support other initiatives as assigned by the EHS Manager.


Required Education / Years and Area of Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in occupational health/safety, environmental health, engineering or the physical sciences.
  • Minimum of 3 years of Environmental Health & Safety experience with responsibilities consistent with the job description within a manufacturing environment.


Preferred Education:

  • Master’s Degree and/or attained ASP/CSP certification preferred and may be considered in the years of experience.


Required Skills:

  • Extensive training and/or experience with a broad array of safety programs including but not limited to fall protection, crane & hoists, confined space, powered industrial vehicles, ergonomics, machine guarding & electrical safety programs.
  • Knowledge of or experience with behavioral based safety programs or human performance programs that proactively engage employees in identifying hazards and preventing mistakes/errors.
  • Proven experience in conducting and facilitating safety training courses for site personnel.
  • Familiarity and experience with conducting safety risk assessments and incident investigations.
  • Experience with safety projects and implementation of safety programs.
  • Experience writing safety documents and putting safety plans together.
  • Experience with and ability to drive deployment and champion change by proactively identifying, analyzing workplace hazards. Able to take the appropriate actions to manage risks to an acceptable level work under limited supervision.


Preferred Skills:

  • Implemented/maintained EHS programs aligned to ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001, OSHA Star Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP), or other recognized EHS standards
  • Experience with environmental programs including air, storm & waste water, hazardous/universal waste, and chemical management
  • Intermediate level of knowledge using standard Microsoft desktop applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, & Outlook). Experience with SharePoint a plus.
