Role Purpose

Design and integrate automated electromechanical systems that deliver precision, throughput, and reliability in advanced manufacturing. This role supports scaling complex technologies into production across Corning facilities, spanning mechanical design, electrical integration, motion control, and controls engineering.

This is a hands-on, high-impact role for an engineer who excels at the intersection of mechanical, electrical, and controls disciplines. You will support the full equipment lifecycle — machine build, FAT, SAT, debugging, optimization, commissioning, production ramp-up, and sustained manufacturing — ensuring systems perform reliably at scale. The ideal candidate is practical, execution-focused, strong across engineering domains, and highly collaborative with mechanical, electrical, controls, software, process, and manufacturing teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and integrate electromechanical systems for high-precision automated manufacturing equipment, including mechanical assemblies, electrical panels, PLC/HMI programming, and motion control architectures.
  • Lead and support machine build, FAT, SAT, debugging, optimization, commissioning, and production ramp-up across multiple Corning sites.
  • Partner with process, controls, software, electrical, and manufacturing engineering teams to achieve OEE, throughput, cycle time, and quality targets.
  • Improve machine robustness, reliability, uptime, and scalability through sound engineering judgment, RCA, and corrective/preventive actions.
  • Drive Kaizen and structured continuous improvement as systems transition from NPI/development into sustained high-volume manufacturing.
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation including engineering drawings, BOMs, wiring diagrams, electrical schematics, P&IDs, and control logic documentation.
  • Provide on-site engineering support during commissioning, IQ/OQ/PQ qualification, and ramp-to-rate to ensure successful technology transfer and production readiness.
  • Identify and implement design improvements that reduce unplanned downtime, improve reliability, and support long-term scalability and cost competitiveness.

Required Education & Experience

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience in automation engineering, controls engineering, electromechanical systems design, mechatronics, machine design, or similar; candidates with fewer years plus an advanced degree are encouraged to apply.
  • Hands-on experience integrating mechanical systems with electrical controls, PLC logic (Allen-Bradley/Rockwell ControlLogix, Siemens S7, or equivalent), servo drives, motion controllers, and automation architectures in manufacturing.
  • Proficiency or familiarity with CAD tools such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD, CATIA, Creo, or equivalent for design, assembly modeling, tolerance analysis, and documentation.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and develop engineering drawings, electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, P&IDs, and control system documentation.
  • Strong cross-functional collaboration skills across mechanical, electrical, controls/software, and process engineering in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
  • Experience transitioning custom automated equipment or new processes into manufacturing, including build, commissioning, IQ/OQ/PQ, and ramp-to-rate.
  • Strong hands-on troubleshooting and execution skills with a track record of diagnosing failures, reducing downtime, and improving equipment reliability.
  • Travel up to 50%. This is a project-based role supporting multiple Corning manufacturing sites, including travel for equipment builds, commissioning, and ramp-up, with the opportunity to work globally and on advanced manufacturing and automation solutions.

Preferred Experience

  • Exposure to vision systems, machine vision, robotics integration, pneumatic systems, hydraulic actuation, or precision linear motion systems.
  • Knowledge of machine safety standards such as ISO 13849 and OSHA machine guarding, including light curtains, safety relays, two-hand controls, and SIL-rated safety components.
  • Familiarity with Lean manufacturing, FMEA/PFMEA, 5S, SPC, and structured problem-solving tools such as 8D, A3, or DMAIC.
  • Scripting, programming, or data acquisition experience in Python, MATLAB, LabVIEW, or similar for monitoring, analysis, or automated test routines is a plus.

This position does not support immigration sponsorship.

The range for this position is $95,227.00 - $130,938.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.
